Default Croakers

Want to take my dad croaker fishing. I have heard that you can't keep them off the hook when the season is in. I'm looking at fishing somewhere between Tappahannock and West Point VA. Thanks.

The croakers are here. Caught a good number last Sunday near the 360 bridge in Tappahannock.

Hey Tuan8301 thanks for the reply. Any particular time of day or bait to use? I have a 24' cuddy I/O to launch so if you could guide me to a good launch site it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Tony

Use either raw shrimp (71-90 size frozen) or squid on a two hook bottom rig, adjust weight as needed to keep it on the bottom. As long as you can use it without snagging bottom, the croaker will hit it if they are around. I always preferred the shrimp, but others will swear by the squid. If the big croaker are around, hooks from 2 to 2/0 will work well. Circle hooks are ok, but the croaker still manage to get them caught in their throat so may as well stick with J hooks. If they are in the mood they will also hit chunks of nightcrawler or bloodworms. Some people also catch them on lures (plastic tail jigs).

If there are crab pots in the area, try around them. May get croaker, may get catfish, probably get both. All depends on the salinity in the river.
