I will be visiting my brother and he just bought a 34' mainship. I will be there for 3 days in June and we were thinking of a chesapeake cruise during that time any ideas on good spots to stay overnight/destinations? Thanks for any info.
If you're going to Hampton, you can stay at the Bluewater Yacht Club in Hampton. There's a pool and a great restaurant (Surf Rider). You can visit the Air and Space Museum which has an Imax theater. At the town dock is the office for the Cousteu Society. A short ride accross the bay is Norfolk Naval Base, Downtown Norfolk and Waterside Marina. For an overnight stay you can cruise up the Pagan River to Smithfield Station which has a good restaurant at reasonable prices. If you cruise further up the James River, you can view the Ghost fleet.
Blue water marina ( not yacht club) is nice and the surrider has good food ( but noisey and the service can be soso). but there is no where else to walk to . the public docks are better IMO . Smithfield station is a great place to go to and stay overnight the Food there great along with the service . you can walk to old down town Smithfield. across the bay there is Bay creek marina and cape Charles . these are on the top of my lists . Now if you have time there is Tangier Island up the bay a ways its a step back in time ( other then a million golf carts ) It something you will never forget.
Smithfield Station is nice and the food is pretty good. There is a nice beach in Poquoson (I think its Back Bay area, someone help me out) that you can almost beach the boat and still have a good 5 feet astern. Gets a little crowded on the weekends but during the week it would be a great place to grab a beer and hit the sand.
Waterside Marina in downtown Norfolk would be a good jumping off point. Waterside Marketplace (a copy of Harbor Place in Baltimore's Inner Harbor) is on the water right next to the marina and there are more pubs and excellent eateries within easy walking distance. Freemason Abby is an old church given new life located a couple of blocks down Busch Street and has good seafood/drink specials. The Marina is at one end of Town Point Park, and the National Maritime Center is at the other, with the battleship Wisconsin moored beside it. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday. And Tangier Island is a must if you have the time. three days ain't much! Good Luck!

Taylors Landing Marina, www.taylorslanding.com Newer facility, pool, shower facilities, guest slips... excellent restaurant on the grounds (Surf Rider), minutes away from some of the best fishing on the Chesapeake, minutes to downtown Norfolk and neighboring Hampton. 8180 Shore Drive, East Ocean View, Norfolk, VA.
Jack, Vinings is in the process of changing the name to "Vinings Landing". But everything else will be the same.
With the limited time you have, you may want to take some of the previous suggestions and stay close to the Hampton Roads. If you decide to venture up the bay, you may want to try:
Tides Inn on the Rappahannock - good food, very attractive setting. They offer a Duffey Boat, kayaks, and canoes to overnight visitors to tour the creek, also have pool, golf, tennis, etc.
Dozier's Marina on the Rappahannock - quiet spot with pool and a great place to boat watch. Nicely kept facility. No restaurant.
