Default Jackspot Expectations

Made it as far as the 1st lump last year and feel like we can make the Jackspot this year without much trouble if we pick our days.

My question is, if we're heading there in early to mid July, what can we expect to pick up and what would be your set up of choice?

I'd be happy with any migratory gamefish.

Fred

Bluefish and the occasional Bluefin should be running near that time. We usually stopped there to get bluefish (for bait) befor running off in search of Mako.

We caught some Spanish Macks there on the troll, green birds. Bluefish too. Fun. We can't go much further...

You'll probably find some small dolphin off the bouys marking the fish traps if the water is good that far inshore.

As far as setup...If your comfortable rigging ballyhoo and can make them swim good then that would be my number one choice...I would run a combination of naked ballyhoo and seawitches/illanders with ballyhoo. If you don't have much experience with ballyhoo then I would run a variety of plastics such as green machines, spreader bars, and plugs.

Mini Green Machines, Zukers feathers, small spreader bars.........and I almost always pull a diving plug.........Rapala Magnum, Mirror Lure 113....etc........almost always the plug gets something...from BFT, bluefish, dolphin, king mackeral......be prepared for chopper bluefish.....and rig accordingly!

the blues will dominate the jackspot... don't pull anything that you don't want to loose.

A GM bird combo WWWWB will entice the BFT that time of year. We have pulled BFT's up to 80's off of the spot.
A drone spoon on a downplanar will produce kings on top dead center of the spot in summer.
Bluefish will hit anything you have in the water.
Feathers & small jets will pull Mahi. Mahi range in size & location on the spot, from 2 to 40#s... they sometimes school up on the NW side near the "fishmouth" section of the spot.

Wow, sounds like you've got some serious experience on the Spot. Thanks for the tips on the bluefish. I just bought a Green Machine and some other rubber that I'd hate to destroy on blues.

I also just bought an EPIRB and will be a bit braver this year. I se Masseys and the Chickwnbone aren't too much further.

Is it worth the trip?

Also, what's a GM bird combo?

Thank you Sir.

Bluefish will shred your lures and keep you busy. I hammered 12 bluefin one day out there last year. Keep an eye on Sunsets website and read the report where the Osprey and Marli are fishing. They stain Bluefin at the Masseys when they show up early. Go and follow them around. At a distance of course.

GM bird- A boone bird (google it) with a green machine behind....

Masseys, the bones & the hotdog are all bluefin territory. The bluefish don't typically venture out that far, so your spread will be safe. Drop your lines back further in the spread & add some ballyhoo to the mix....

Just outside of the Jackspot are the 20 Fathom fingers... home to Mr Mako in May/June.

Sorry for the late response. I've got a Sea Hunt Triton 207 with a Yamaha F150 on the back. Not a great boat for that far out, but I'm confident that if we have a day like we had last year when we hit the lumps we should be good to go.

Just bought an EPIRB and various safety equipment for these occasions. I'd like to get dye markers and a 25mm flare or two next.

7/9-7/18..........best couple of days out of that range and I sure could use some big friends.

I have less experience than you out there but it just so happens my brother will be coming in to town and wants to fish out of OC. His in-laws have a place across the border in Delaware and I told him I would bring my boat down so we could get some fishing in. If it happens that the dates work out maybe we could buddy up. I've been buying some additional safety gear in preparation.

I have been there a few times......We chunked once and got 2 bluefin 40-50 pounds and about a dozen jumbo bluefish 15 pounders or so. The other time we trolled for a few hours coming back from off shore and trolled 1 50 pound bluefin.
