Default Visit DC/Alexandria Help

All,

I am planing to take a long weekend to do some sight seeing in DC and was thinking of staying in Alexandria since I will be coming from Raleigh NC. any suggestions on what to see in DC and stay in Alexandria. I would like to be within walking distance to the Metro and be in an area with shopping and restaurants.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Mike

anywhere around the king street metro stop would be good to go. i know there's hilton, hampton inn, embassy suites...probably a marriott too. you can walk around old town alexandria from there and it's about a 20 minute metro ride into downtown d.c.

Take the metro to the Smithsonian exit and check out the mall and museums. American History just re-opened and there is some new stuff at the natural history. Can spend a week on the mall if you want.

The Hilton on King Street right across from the Metro is a nice hotel and of course the Metro is right there. Also, don't discount staying at hotels in Crystal City. The metro is accessible there as well and there are some nice restaurants. There is also the Ritz at Pentagon City that is right at the Pentagon City mall and the metro as well.

Also, higher end but new is the Gaylord across the river on the Maryland side. That property is right on the river. Have fun.

the only thing about crystal city is that is kind of shuts down after the office crowd leaves. a few of the restuarants there along crystal drive have a bit of a night life and yeah there's pentagon city mall...but old town (where king street metro is located) definitely provides more options.

the gaylord seems nice -- been there once for a conference -- but there's nothing around it to walk to...it's pretty isolated. no metro access. i've heard they're supposed to get a good water taxi service this spring to make connections to old town and downtown d.c. better...if that happens it would be a prety cool option.

edit: actually found a link for the water taxi. it starts march 1: http://www.potomacriverboatco.com/newtaxi.php

If it were me, I'd save a few bucks and stay at the holiday inn in rosslyn instead of a high dollar place in old town. Walk to georgetown or hop on any number of busses or metro from there.

gaylord is isolated and far from finished. Stay downtown or on king street to get the flavor of the place
