Default Cobia Report - Hampton, VA Chesapeake Bay

Wow what a day. 9 for 13 on the cobia on Blue Fish Rock, Sunday, 21 Sep 08.

Fished with Wes Blow, and Brian (Fishboy01). Departed at 6:30 am with lines in the water at little after 7 am. Little bumpy with the winds as predicted at NE 10-15 but got better as the day went on. Within 10 minutes of fishing, Wes gets a run and boats a small cobia about 38 inches. Not a bad start. Then nothing until the chum starts flowing good then a steady pick of cobia, some small and some medium size to 38 lbs. By slack tide around 11:00 am we are 5 for 8 on the cobia. Then wait around with a slow pick of sharks during a 2 hour slack period and a few naps while waiting. Then after the incoming starts moving again the cobia bite picks up again and we finish the day at 4 pm going 9 for 13 on the cobia. Most cobia I've seen in one day. )

We decide we are going to fish until 4 pm and Wes pulls in a nice cobia right at 4 pm. As Brian clears the lines to go home, he sees a nice cobia follow the eel up but doesn't eat. Brian drops it back down and jigs the eel and he hits it for a nice fight bringing in a cobia that misses citation by 1 lb going 54 lbs at the weigh station. Great day and is unbelievable that there are so many cobia around this late into September that are responding to chum. We kept 3 cobia for the grill from 34 to 54 lbs.

Some fishing info. We fished with all eels using 80 lb 3-4 foot mono leaders on a gamakatsu 10.0 Octipus hook on a standard fish finder rig. 5 lines out, 2 on Torium 30s and 2 on Torsa 30s and 1 on a spinner on a float behind the boat. The one on top never got touched. Reels were on free spool with the clicker on. When a fish hit, we would take it out of the rod holder but let the fish run a while before engaging the reel, then set the hook hard. Tournament chum on the bottom in a chum weighted bucket. Wes also periodically chunked cut bunker. I believe it was the chum that brought the fish to the boat but it was likely the chunks that kept them at the boat and got them into a feeding mode.

Great day on the water. Thanks Wes and Brian for coming along.

Here is short video of the day. I wanted to get some cobia video as I did not have any up until now.

I didn't think they would be there last weekend but you don't know if you don't go.
