Default Moving to Virginia

I have been given the opportunity to stay on active duty and finish my 20. I need 18 months, so the Admiral will work PRN (she is a nurse) and then come up every 2 weeks. If anyone lives in the Woodbridge area, that is where I am looking to rent.

Thanks

Good Luck KA!!

Being a native of Greensboro I can say with certainty it will be a change. I lived in Oakton in the late 80's and I actually enjoyed it. Also, you'll be closer to the lower bay and some great fishing!

I'm in woodbridge. You have to pick your areas. Some of them are a little Ghetto. Overall its not a bad area, though. What makes you choose woodbridge?

I lived in Lorton for 5 years when I was stationed at the Pentagon. We are driving up now to look and sign some papers. I am getting an apartment at Lorton Station. IT is close to the VRE and centrally located. I do not want to deal with yards or anything like that, as I will be there a short time and still will maintain a house in Greensboro. My wife will commute back to NC unless she finds a job. I may need a place for the boat, but I think Fort Belvoir has storage.

If your wife is a nurse, she can find work anywhere. They are in demand now! Good luck

Okay sounds like a good central location.
There is a good storage lot at Holly Acres, its where my boat is www.hollyacres.com.....about $55 a month or so, though. How big is the boat and what do you mostly use it for? Hauling up and down I95 isn't alot of fun if you saltwater fish alot.

I live in Fairfax but keep my boat at Flag Harbor Marina in St Leonard, Md. It's about 1 hr and 15 minute drive but its worth it to be right on the bay. Decent slip fees. Lots of rentals up in Fairfax too and close to VRE or Metro if your going into DC.

I live in east fairfax / south alexandria and keep my boat on the trailer in chesapeake beach (rod n reel marina west). It's $1400/year and there are 6 ramps on the property. It's just a few hundred yards to the bay. Just a thought.

I have a few friends that live in Hoodbridge. I keep my boat at Breezy Point Marina, it's 55mins from Bethesda.

I purchased my boat at Holly Acres in 2003. It would be funny to go back there. Thanks for the suggestions. The boat is 23 feet. We use it at Wrightsville Beach mostly, a few times at the lake. Ho long does it take to get to the Chesapeake Bay?

You can be in the lower bay in about 3 hours from the Pentagon area, trailering that is.

From my house in Hoodbridge, including stops for gas and breakfast, ice, and getting bait, its right at 3 hours to the Dandy Point launch on the lower bay. I've never launched on the upper bay.
One nice thing about keeping it up here is that if you like to play you can launch on the Potomac. You can even hunt catfish if the bay is a blowout....just don't eat them....
I got my boat from Holly Acres, too, and talked them into a year of storage, so I keep it there. I like the secure access and that if I need maintenence I can just call and say "go get my boat".
What kind of boat do you have? I'm 23', too.

I don't know how long ago you left but things have changed alot (except for the land fill stench in the hot summers). I lived in Lakeridge about 10 years ago and Lorton has changed alot since then.

It is (was) a Trophy 1903 CC. It no longer resembles that anymore.

Can you get to the bay by water, or is that too long a ride?

You can, but its a long ride, at least an hour by water. I haven't done it yet, but was thinking about it this fall.
You can put in down along the potomac, around Colonial beach and its already salt water there....not far to the bay for stripers blues and other upper bay species.

There's also a launch at Westmorland State park just past Colonial Beach.....not sure about the condition of the launch there, but that's pretty close to the bay.

From DC you can be in Annapolsi in about 40 minutes with light traffic. Weekends through Annapolis can be horrible if you dont time it right as the only way to Ocean city MD is over the Bay Bridge.
