Default Hampton Roads fishing

Hi,
I live in Williamsburg and usually fish the James but would like to start venturing into the Bay to try for some drum, striper, cobia, etc. Can anyone suggest some good locations or suggestions (bait, etc.) as a staring point (Hampton Roads area), the bay is pretty big and I have no idea where to start, other than looking for other boats.

Thanks

Do you trailer? If so the Willoughby boat ramp is a good starting point. Its free , has a new ramp, and right next to the interstate. You can troll between the bridges for some flounder or head over to the "ODU" reef near Little Creek.

If you don't want to come across the HRBT there are supposed to be some good ramps in Hampton (although I don't know them). That will give you access to the same areas Capt Kenny is talking about plus the bluefish rock area and shoals off Hampton. Dont' forget to check out tidalfish, more information but like anywhere some of it has to be deciphered and sifted through.

Probably will trailer, it's 40 miles via the water to the 64 tunnel. I found a few ramps in Hampton. What would be my best bet to try for this time of year, from what I've read there seems to be some pretty good drum beinhg caught. Other than croaker. I haven't done much salt water fishing.

Thanks

youshomd,

I have launched out of Petersons in Newport News. Nice ramp and its about 7 miles west of Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel by water.
My favorite ramp is over in Grandview in Hampton. The Marina their was called Wallaces but I hear they have closed. The ramp is a public
one so their are no fees and it puts you right at the mouth of the Back River. The real nice part is its only 4 miles by water to Blue Fish Rock.
The Cobia capital of the bay. Its also convenient for trips to the Eastern Shore from there. About 15 miles due east by water. From the mouth of the Back River you can almost see the concrete ships from there on a clear day. If I was to travel from Williamsburg, Grandview would be my top spot. Get a Chesapeake Bay navigational map and you will see how convenient that area is to access some of the best fishing holes on the East Coast.

The bait and tackle shop is under new management. Still open, selling bait

Thats good to hear. I haven't been there since last summer. I hope to do some Cobia fishing out of there in about a month or so.
I just wished I was a little closer to them. The pot hole patches on 664 on my side keep most of my launching out of Portsmouth city park.
Its uncomfortable to feel and see your boat get airborn every time I hit one. Maybe before I'm too old and gray, they may actually fix that road.
