Striper and flounder have been on for several weeks now and I caught a bushel of crabs last Saturday.

I went back down to Delaware this past week, still looking for a place to settle down in. I did notice something that I found different. There really aren't that many marinas in the area.Do the mechanics travel to your dock if you aren't in a marina with repair facilities? I do like the lewes area but I am leaning more to the south which would probably force me to have my boat in rehoboth bay or indian river bay. When does the fishing get going there?
Good observation on the lack of waterfront marinas. Our guys do travel to the boats for service reasons, etc. There is a dryu stack at Indian River, and one up by us here in Milford, at Slaughter Beach. The fishing is firing as we write this. Stripers, bluefish, etc. Tons of fun without all the traffic---yet. Drop a line if you'd like more info anytime.

thanks for the response guys,
Sounds like it may get busy with boat traffic come summer huh? I am going to be down there in the early summer to hopefully buy some property.I guess I will see just how busy it is then. Is there anywhere you can rent a boat for the day down there? I love the area but to me it is strange that there are so few waterfront marinas there, i guess its because up here marinas are everywhere. What are some of the most popular places to go fishing or to cruise to in the delaware area? Any personal favorites?

Its a great area to fish!!! flounder stripers croakers blues all inshore or back bays. Just a short trip outside you can be out sea bassin or sharkin for mr long tail. Ive only been fishin there for about ten years but i love the area!!! Weekends r hell!! But during the week you have the place to yourself. There r places on Rehobeth Bay to rent boats but not sure where they r try a google search. Im headed down this weekend ill look to see if i can find info.

as far as a boat goes i'd go with a 23 foot center console. I have a 26 foot Triton walkaround and lil big for back bays and sucks for driftin with more than 3 people. Also i have twin 200's so fuel is gettin expensive. Just get a center with curtains that can snap to gunnals when running and you'll be set!!!

as far as slips go you can pay as little as a grand on up depends where you wanna slip. del has some great boat ramps if u wanna trailor.

If your down and wanna take a ride pm me and we could set up some thing

Jim

Been boating out of IRI for a number of years now and I agree with nearly everything above except for one comment. The inlet can have a strong outgoing tide and a bit of an incoming wind will make breakers/rollers stack up in the inlet. If you have a boat capable of getting through them often times you get outside the inlet and it is very fishable. The key is to have a boat, and skipper, capable running it. I think you are on the right track thinking a 24'+ boat that you can safely run the inlet, fish offshore, get to the "Old Grounds" and other reef sites bottom fishing. I would also recommend, if you have a place to keep it, a jon boat or pontoon boat to get into the skinny waters.

As to the question of how dangerous the inlet can be, here it is from this Monday during the storm. Gusts to 70 mph!!

Peconic, Lewes is a very nice town and there are boat slips available there, just not alot of them. Most places have waiting lists, although the weak economy and high gas prices may free up a few this season. I keep my boat on the canal in Lewes and we have quite a number of Parkers and Gradys. We use our boat as a floating condo while we are there, also to fish and crab. The canal is a nice ride from Lewes to Rehoboth bay and into Indian River Bay. It is shallow but the channel is marked well. Did the run last summer in my old 26' Searay. Lots of people cruise to Cape May on nice weekends, they have more marinas and waterfront resturants. There is a boatyard in Lewes with a large tavel lift and you can work on your own boat there or have techs. come to you. Lewes has a public ramp with a new state of the art one scheduled to open this fall, also the boatyard has a private ramp.
