Default Rudee Inlet friday and saturday

heading up to rudee on thursday night and plan on fishing friday and saturday. we usually fish out of oregon inlet but since every year we end up running up the beach several hours to find fish we decided to go ahead and start a little farther north.

haven't heard many reports the last week or so but know that the bite has been really hot. is it still hot? we plan on trying several things till we figure out what they are biting. any advise for the best thing to use and if we should go north or south of the inlet to find fish???

we have never been out of rudee before so we are not very familiar with the area so any advice on good places to eat, tackle shops, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

hope someone can help us out a little
Thanks

The bite is still good. A friend has been giving me reports that Cape Henry has been productive. Umbrellas with green bait has been the ticket. Try some mojos also in green..........good luck

the bite has been hit or miss with these cold fronts coming thru and the barometric pressure fluctuation a lot. people have been getting limits both to the north and south of rudee inlet. best tackle shop in the area is oceans east 2, closest to rudee inlet is pa distributors on 17th street. it pretty much doesnt matter what u throw out there when they are biting theyll eat anything. watch yourself on the 3 mile line as the man is out in force. good places to eat - breakfast at marys on 17th street or big sams down at the inlet. lunch/dinner and beer at phils grill on 11th street.

There are plenty of places to eat within five minutes of the ramp. On the north side of the inlet you've got places like Rudee's, Dirty Dick's. and many more on the strip along the beach. One place worth considering is Harpoon Larry's. South of the ramp along General Booth Blvdyou have the traditional restaurant's you would find around a mall. As far as tackle goes, there's a new shop that opened up just south of the ramp in the K-Mart shopping center. It's Bruce's.

Good luck when you go

I saw a 73lber today at VA Beach Fishing Center. Check out TidalFish.com VA Angler board, pics are all over it. I swear that fish could have gone upper 70's with a full belly. New State Record. It's been pretty good lately, we've been dragging Mojos w/ trailers on the bottom and some Stretches as well.
If your using the ramp on Saturday-get there early, it's been a friggin' zoo on the weekends. Glad I don't have to mess with that circus. Big Sams and Harpoon Larry's are where all the fishing stories (lies) are told.
Good Luck

Default RE: Rudee Inlet friday and saturday

sorry for the late report. friday morning it was way to windy to go out so we hung around till about 1pm and decided to give it a try. headed south around 10-12 miles and trolled around a little. nothing...no bait no fish, anything. had 2 other boats with us they had the same luck. got back to the hotel and asked around a little no one did anything except for one boat that went another 10 or so miles south of us. they limited out, that was the only boat we heard of on friday that caught a fish. went to Big Sams that night for dinner and drinks, they have some killer food.

we had heard of all the traffic at the owl creek ramp on the weekend so we left our hotel around 5:30 saturday morning. the ramp was already backed up a couple hundred yards into the road but we managed to be in the water by around 6:15. the other 2 boats that we were with were about 30 minutes behind us and by that point the line was backed up almost to the bridge. they went back to the hotel to wait it out and didn't get in the water till after 9.

we assumed we were gonna head south and when we came out of the inlet thats where all the boats were going so we just kept in line and kept going and going. at one point someone came on the radio and asked if we were heading to florida. we ended up around 30 miles south in coralla, NC. there was a few miles there where there was at least 400 boats. there would be a big group then a couples miles south would be another big group and so on and so on. at one point i counted almost 200 boats that i could see from the captains seat. it was a cluster. lost 2 stretch 30's because some moron cut to close to us and we were pinched in, thought we were clear of them when the drag started taking off and thought we had a double hook up until we realized there was no way a striper was almost spooling our reels.

all the action was between 8:30 and 11, after that it just died. we put 3 in the box and missed 4 more which we blamed on each other as angler error. they weighed in at 22 lbs. 20 lbs. and 19lbs. the other 2 boats with us headed north to cape henry when they got in the water and by the time they got to where we were the bite was over and neither boat caught a fish. heard of some boats catching 5 or 6and others 1 or 2 so i guess we did ok compared with everyone else.

after lunch no one was catching anything and the radio chatter started out funny and then went straight into a bunch of idiots saying they were hooked up every 2 minutes. so we decided to head back in around 2 and pulled the boat out of the water around 4 after a very enjoyable ride back. at one point there was some snow flurries out on the ocean, they only lasted about 10 minutes but still pretty cool. no facilties to clean the fish so we paid $5 per fish to have them cleaned and they were cleaned and back on ice in less than 5 minutes. we then headed back over to Big Sams for dinner, it was that good.

it was a fun trip but wish we would have caught more. it was the first time to virginia beach for most of us and we really enjoyed the area. we will be back there again.

fishindevil,

Glad you had a good time up here! This time of year there are some nice fish but they are generally more scattered and the Bay is closed. I would highly recommend a trip in late November / early December. As a rule the fish aren't quite a big but there are some nice ones and the opportunities are much more favorable.

That said, I'll still be out this weekend.

OK conditions look kinda rough at OI so I think were headin to Rudee. Ive never been up there, but I know the ramp gets crowded real quick. what time should I get there in order to not have to wait an hour to launch and is there enough parking around or what?

There was a thread on TF this week about it backing up as early as 5:30 am although he said he was headed out the inlet about 6:30 if I recall correctly. Since you are trailering from NC (I assume) I'd just put in at Lynnhaven, the ride around the corner isn't that bad and you can just start at Cape Henry. I'll be coming out of Little Creek which is another 4 nm beyond Lynnhaven.

I typed in "Crab Creek Virginia Beach VA" in Google Maps and it put it right on the money. A satelite view was informative. There are several decent places on Shore Dr to stay. An online chart can be seen at http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/12221.shtml

Are you coming up 13, 17 or 95?

As of today it looks like the better weather is going to be Sunday.
