Default Hampton VA

HI All,

I'm hoping somebody can give me some inside tips on Hampton VA, places to hang out, drink beers, sight seeing...I'm headed there to represent the boatyard I work for www.wayfarermarine.com at an event that is being held at Bluewater Yachting Center-- I've spent some time in Portsmouth/Norfolk, but never Hampton. I'm there from the 30th of Oct to the 3rd of November, any thoughts, tips, ideas appreciated. I've got a room booked at some place called Hampton Harbor Hotel...any warnings appreciated, it looks "Ok" on their website, and they claim to have a few bars downstairs.

Thanks for info/help

Best,

Ben

The Bluewater has the Surf Rider Restaurant. The food is good and has a great bar. The Hampton Marina Hotel (formerly Radisson) has a good sports bar. You can walk to the Air and Space Museum and I-Max. You can also drive to one of the largest Bass Pro shops. There's a head boat to go fishing from Hampton. It's the Ocean Eagle. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Hi Mud Runner-- Thanks for that- Looks like I've got a few afternoons worth of activities right there! Sounds like the credit card will take a good whack next week.

I second what MudRunner posted. In addition, there is a Harpoon Larry's a short distance away. Good food and bar there but I like Surfrider better. Marker 20 Restaurant is pretty good also.

Not sure about the hotel. We usually stay on the other side of the tunnel.

Get a map. Rent a car, don't go walking anywhere.
At night stay away from the areas of Phoebus, and Buckroe Beach. Stay off Pembroke Avenue, Kecoughtan Road, Victoria Blvd., Mallory Street, and especially Shell Road.
Stay away from the south end of the City of Newport News

Hi Ron

Thanks for that uplifting post, good info for a white boy from Maine to know, albeit morbid...I've got the rental car set, will certainly get a map, and lock myself into the local hotel bar at night.

I've got the best of both worlds . . . . I live in Norfolk and work in Portsmouth

Actually there are some pretty decent places in both ... and some places I won't go at night.

the only time I've spent in Virginia previous was at Ocean Marine in portsmouth on an Eastbay 47 for a few days and we hauled there on a Grand Banks 42 for a spell, both boats I was delivering-- thats a nice yard...didn't venture too far though

Prowlerfish: No, I am not afraid of the dark. I am quite familiar with the crime trends in the areas I described. I stand by my comments.

Bencashen: I am not trying to scare you; I just want you to be safe. I would not call any of those areas a war zone; it is just that a lot of bad people live in some of those areas.

If you frequent those areas often enough, sooner or later you will be a victim, especially if you are alone and on foot.

At night if you are in a car, driving to a restaurant or a shopping center, you will be ok. Provided the area where you stop is well lit and you remain alert. Don’t drink too much or stay out too late. Don’t be tempted to walk over to the local 7-Eleven to by a 6 pack at midnight.

Hey,

across the tunnel is a little bar called Sunset Grill. Nice little bar on the water. It's the first exit into Norfolk. Can't miss it off the exit. Over looks the marina.

Good luck

Here is the good stuff.

You will only be about 4-5 miles from Bass Pro shops on Power Plant Parkway. Great place to visit.

The safest place on the Virginia Peninsula is Poquoson. Nice small city, very safe. Next would be York County on Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Hwy). There are a lot of places to eat out there. That is about 10-15 miles from downtown Hampton.

For shopping there is a large mall in the northern section of Newport News. Patrick Henry Mall. That area has just about everything. It is on Jefferson Avenue (route 143), north of Oyster Point Road (route 171)

Also Colonial Williamsburg is a great place to site see, if you would like to see what the United States looked like in the 1700’s,

Williamsburg also has a very nice amusement park, Bush Gardens, on Route 60.

One of best maritime museums in the country is Mariners Museum at the intersection of Warwick Blvd, and J.Clyde Morris Blvd. (route 60 & Rt.17) in Newport News.
