Where exactly do blood worms come from?

I've always assumed that they are blood suckers of some sort and that there's a some sort of blood worm "farms" out there...

I saw a dirty jobs episode about blood worms. I believe it was in Maine, people were using a big rake to dig them out of a huge tidal mud flat, I think they got paid a quarter per worm.
