Anyone haul out of Kiptopeke with 2wd. My fishing buddy for our annual CBBT trip has baby number 3 due the weekend we usually go. I am going to haul down with my truck. We usually tow my boat down with his 2500 4x4. Unfortuantely I have seen the sand on the ramp and the wetness. I do have a locking differential (no limited slip but locking). I hope to not have issues..
I have used that ramp a few times over the last two years. The pavement surface is concrete and in good condition. Sand does build up, especially on the north side, but it did not seem that slippery to me.
I have a 4x4 truck but did not put the truck into 4 wheel to pull out my boat (as I remember). But my boat is only an 18 footer, so a bigger boat might be tougher to pull out.
I think you'll be fine if you lock the differential.
all the Va ramps i have used are really nice. I have never put in at Kiptopeke but i have at Lynnhaven, Willoughby, Messick Point. Gloucester Pnt. Gywnn Island and East River and I have never had to put my Tundra in 4wd to pull out. Although I do have a very light 16' whaler so maybe thats a key factor too.
Late last year (just before New Years), the ramp had a lot of sand on the north side....enough that you could not use the north side of the ramp. That made the lines really long waiting to put the boats in. I hope they cleaned it out since I have not been down there yet this year, but will be going done later this month and Dec.
What would be a good time for a trip... Week before Xmas?
The water is just now starting to cool down so the fish from NY, DE should start to make their way south. I would not wait past Dec. 10 for the simple reason that the creel limit will go from 2 to 1 fish per person. Additionally there is a no keep slot of 28" to 34" and only one of the two fish can be over 34".
That said there will be a lot of folks fishing the week between Christmas and New Years . . . . and I will be amoung them. The week before Christmas will be much quieter and there should be some nice fish in the bay.
