North Carolina started the saltwater license this year. $30/yr for non-residents like me. Do not know what current plans are for the money BUT IF some is spent on increasing the number of excellent ramps they have the cost would be worth it. Why can't New Jersey and Maryland develop great ramps like Delaware and North Carolina??? Many of the fee ramps in NJ are nearly useless at low tide and almost all are useless at low tide if you have a drive on trailer. In Maryland the county ramps are fair but lack enough parking and some lack any dock whatsoever. We may as well face it - saltwater licenses are likely to become the norm over the next decade - the question is WHAT will be done to help the saltwater fishermen/women ( if anything!) with that $. If it gets dumped into the General Fund just kiss that money goodbye. Ray S aka Mako 15
Maybe I'm confused - it certainly wouldn't be the first time - but our MD Tidal/Bay Sportfishing license is the same as what VA calls a saltwater license. Aren't we talking about the same thing?
My understanding is that the proceeds fund the DNR.

Does everyone just get a personal fishing license for the most part, or a recreational boat license? I have family and friends from out of state that I hope to take fishing. In Florida we had to run by wal-mart and get them a license the night before. If I could get an affordable boat license and save them the trip it would be nice. Would it be the $38.50 one or the $250?? what's the difference? (I asked the nice girl at walmart, but just got a blank stare)

Get the $38 license and it covers everyone on your boat and also covers you when your not on your boat. It covers you for 12 months not the calendar year. You can buy it online, print it out, save it in PDF form until you get the sticker for your hull. You'll get it within a week. Here's the website to purchase it.
Maryland Chesapeake Bay license (boat decal) is $40/yr and covers everybody on board, and also includes an individual license for the boat owner. IMO, not a bad deal.
In Maryland (By Law) all the money raised through fishing license revenue must be used for management of the fishery. Therefore, I support the increase of fees for a fishing license. The money raised by fishing licenses goes into the General Fund but must be provided to MDDNR. The MDDNR budget has been cut drastically since Glendening was Gov. The Department is in dire need of funds to accomplish much of the necessary work needed. Another $10 or so is not going to hurt most of us and might help in improving the quality of our fishery.
