Thinking of keeping the boat in OC this summer. Not ready to make canyon runs. I know the bay & inlet areas well. What type of fishing can I do if I limit runs to approx 25 mi offshore ?
Elusive i have run to the hambone in my boat 40+ on good days. The jackspot is 17-20. You can catch anything there dolphin, blues, king mack, bft sharks etc... We will hook up for sure...I have some real good numbers for ya on wrecks and the local spots as well. With your boat you would be fine to run out to the deep the canyons are not everything there is a lot of life around the 30 -40 fathom line in summer time. Let me know what you need and we can hook up.
there are tons of wreck and man made reef sites with in 25 miles of OC. You can get a OC reef foundation chart from Ake marine in OC for $25. It is well worth it...as far as off shore, that boat would be fine on most days....i have been running the canyons for years in a 27' Albemarle
Yes there is a lot of good fishing off the Delaware and Maryland Coast without running to the canyons. If you are willing to go the just a bit further than the 25 you mentioned you can reach the lumps off OC, Hambone, Chicken Bone, Hot Dog and Masseys Canyon. Tuna, Mahi, Shark and Marlin all to be had there. You won't have any problems finding these places either, just get in line and follow the crowd.
If your not into that, there are lots of good places to bottom fish for Flounder, Sea Bass and other species closer in. Many tackle shops carry the charts with all the spots well marked, or if you need I can give you numbers.
We fish all these areas on a regular basis and make the run to the canyons often, if you need any further information let me know.
Agree on all the above. If you want to buddy up, let me know. Tons of spots to fish. Depending on the temps Jackspot can be hot and it's only @20 mi. offshore. Tons of wrecks less than that (@12 mi.)
Hi all! I have been fishing the Assowoman bay and the surrounding ares for years and I have recently purchased a new 22.5 ft Key West Walk Around because I need a new challege. What range/fishing can I expect coming from the OC inlet? Can anyone suggest areas to try first for a beginner? Thanks
if you are new to boating in the inlet / Rt90 area, start slow and stay in the channel...i see well over 100 boats run aground each year down here. the fishing is pretty good from april----december, depending on what you like to catch....you can also stick your nose out in the ocean on flat days w/ that boat....Little gull shoals is right @ the 3 mi line and usally holds stripers/ flounder/trout/ect...Ake marine by the commericial dock has good charts and up to date info all year long.
with the 22.5 walkaround you can fish almost anywhere as long as you pick your days....start close to the beach, and you will find yourself wanting to get out further...i have a 21 striper cc....fished poormans canyon last year..also frequently ran to the 20 fathom line to fish for sharks...

Gary, if you take your boat to OC, why would you limit yourself to 25 mi offshore? The fishing in the bay there sucks, and the inlet is hit or miss. When the conditions are right the offshore fishing can be awesome, and your boat would be a great offshore boat. If you wanna run offshore give me a call. I have all the gear, and numbers. I'll start sharking at the end of May. It would be a waste to have a boat like yours in OC, and limit yourself to 25mi. when the conditions are right I can practically guarantee you a bill fish. How cool would it be for you to catch a marlin on your boat? Give me a call!
The Hot Dog is approx 40 miles out. I've seen much smaller boats than yours out there. You could do that run easy. Of course you have to pick your days but you have to do that anyway. Tuna galore out there at times. I even hooked a big blue marlin there trolling a ballyhoo a few years ago. Wahoo too! Good luck. Maybe I'll see you down there.
