If I live in Woodbridge, va and dock the boat in Norfolk, va, do I register it as norfolk or woodbridge for tax purposes? Will there be an issue if it is registered in woodbridge even thought it's kept in norfolk? Anyone know what the taxes are in Norfolk on boats? The county I live in has no personal property tax on boats, hence the question. Just curious.
I live in Fairfax and keep mine in Md. If your active military there are no personal property taxes if the boat is registered in your name ONLY. Mine is documented so I cant help you out on the registration. Did you buy the boat in Woodbridge? If so, you'll probably have to pay any county sales taxes, I looked on the PWC taxes site and didn't see any specific info on registering boats. When I asked fairfax the same type of question I was told they didn't really care or check where it was kept.
In VA, the county you dock in will find your boat at the marina and expect prop tax to be paid there. I found that out when I had my MD boat at a VA dealer for brokerage last year. I was asked "where was your boat Jan 1?"
I am not sure about sales tax and registration.

The boat will be purchased in Maryland. I have found that the sales tax here in Virginia is 2% not to exceed 2K. Prince William County doesn't have personal property tax on boats. I know they do have it in Norfolk, I just don't know if they would bother to check or even look. It's not a different state, so I'm not sure what would tip them off, other than there might be a decal or something. I'm not sure what the tax rate is on boats in the Norfolk area. I haven't been able to find that yet. Hopefully someone from that are will chime in.
From what I understand some counties will walk through a marina and write down all the registration numbers then check to see if tax was paid. If not, they coontact you at the address of record on your registration.
If you don't get much in the way of response here, post over on tidalfish.com on the VA Angler board. It's a lot busier than this board.

What kind of boat are you looking a? Not to derail the thread, but I drive about 65 miles to my boat in St Leonard most every weekend. It's not too bad a drive and a lot closer than norfolk.
Thanks for the information so far. I may post on tidalfish and see what I get over there as well. I guess the main question is, when/if they catch on the worst that's going to happen is I have to start paying the taxes??
I'm looking at a 28 albemarle. The reason for Norfolk is ocean access and I also have family there. It's about the same distance down there as it would be to drive to somewhere like Ocean City.
Hampton and Virginia Beach have no property tax. If you keep your boat in Norfolk, all marinas are required to give the county a list of customers. If you keep the boat inNorfolk, you must pay $25 for a user fee sticker that is displayed on the hull next to the reg numbers. I live in Va Beach and keep it in Norfolk and pay only the $25. Hope this helps
Thanks MudRunner. I think that clears it up. $25 isn't too bad. I was afraid it was going to be hundreds of dollars or something. I can live with the 25. Thanks Again.
I live in Arlington ... but have the boat in Hampton. Naturally Arlington thinks I have the boat here thanks to the VA game & wildlife registration. Need to get it cleared up fast. Arlington is not so easy on the wallet when it comes to PP tax! Jackals!
I read that information about the .01 per hundred. That was what i was wondering about. So I guess that is on top of the $25 for the sticker? I have to wonder how the come up with the price to use? Bill of sale I guess? I guess that would still be less than $20 for me ..plus the sticker. I think I can live with that.
Mildly related, but it's mostly a rant, so ignore if you will:
The laws are written in contradiction of themselves in some cases. You have to register in the state of principal use correct? (Says it real big at the top of the FAQ pages of both VA and NC.) BUT, you have to title it in that state also for whatever reason. You can't title a boat in a state you don't have an address in.
I rent in NC for 3 months (summer), use the boat for those 3 months nearly everyday. I live in VA for the rest of the year, but I'm in Blacksburg (way too far from deep/saltwater to use my boat) for 8 months. That leaves one month possible to use the boat in VA. State of principal use, and taxation for all I care, is NC. I cannot register or title the boat in NC because I don't own property there. Fine, I put the boat in the water in Virginia Beach if I'm in Virginia using it...nope, can't go with Va Beach because it ain't docked there.
So for me, the taxation, titling, etc is in Suffolk, Virginia. That ain't the place of principal use, it's the place of principal 'sit on the trailer in the driveway'.
Why?

I live in Richmond and keep my boat year-roundin Deltaville in Middlesex county. My marina must haveinformed the county about my boat being in Middlesex. I received a letter from the county a few weeks ago asking "Was your boat in Middlesex county as of Jan 1? Is it for personal or business use?" The form also listed the $value for my boat that I submitted when I titled it in Virginia summer of last year.
I called into the county yesterday to understand what property taxes they were looking to collect on the boat. The answer was .8 % + .35% for a total of 1.15%. I didn't quite catch why the tax was broken up in two components. I also asked whether I owed anything for the half-year my boat was in the county last year, and was told that they don't pro-rate and it is all driven off where the boat is on January 1.
This system seems wide open to abus where anyone with a trailer should just move their boat out of Middlesex for Jan 1 to a county with a lower tax.

Mike, KEEP YOUR BOAT IN MIDDLESEX - MUCH lower P.P. taxes than in the Richmond area!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I live in Mechanicsville, and when I had to move mine from Deltaville (was keeping it at my Mom's and she moved back to Rcihmond) in 2003, Hanover Co. charged me about DOUBLE the next tax year more than Middlesex - from about $220 to just under $400 - and the rig was a YEAR OLDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The difference in the "tax rate per $100 assessed value" is less than $0.05, so you can SEE that Middlesex doesn't "value" as HIGH!.
Both counties use about the same "figures" on the boat, motor, and trailer, BUT Middlesex doesn't tax based on the same TOTAL VALUE - they give boaters a BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't think ANY of the counties in VA (that HAVE P.P. tax on boats) "prorate" anymore (if they ever did?) on BOATS.
You'll probably run into a similar situation if you kept your boat in Chessterfield, Henrico, Powhatan, Goochland, King William, City of Richmond, etc..
There's no breaks for boaters in the "metro" area!!!!!!!!!!
Not sure what the "2" different taxes from Middlesex were/are, but I think they will treat you fairly - nice folks, when I have had occasion to speak with them.
