Roll of dimes............

Beautiful welds, no under cut, VERY symmetrical , no spatter , no distortion , no clouds out from the welds [ Proper inert gas was used ] , good travel speed, proper wire feed, proper feed angle, matched filler metal, good penetration and of course , one heck of a steady hand.

Jay all I can say is give your welders a RAISE or a BONUS ..............

I can tell ya this " If a weld looks good , it is good " because to make a GOOD LOOKING weld it has to have been done RIGHT and there is no way around it .

My knowledge is from years of experience . I carried 3 LA welding cert's ,Structural S.M.A.W, Structural F.C.A.W. and Lite Gauge S.M.A.W. along with numerous shop certs. I also taught welding at Modern Welding Trade school in Anaheim Ca.
Anybody that knows what it takes to get a Los Angles welding cert knows they don't give them away, I have yet to see a welding Inspector pass the test on the 1st try , I passed my 3 on the 1st time every time .

No one noticed the cupholders? I'm inordinately proud of them - you can pic the boat up by the cupholders!
Yeah, and the look on your face when I said "No cupholders" oh man that was priceless. My response pf god gave us two cup holders and a real man doesn't put his beer down until the can is empty.

Thanks Ludicrous...I always feel like I got to got to the Miami Boatshow with your pictures.

I think the ROck Salt looks great. Very innovative and has clean lines, not choppy. I know little about boat building and nothing about working with metal....but could the strakes ever be stamped into the hull? It seems like that is everyones main concern. I think the welds are great and just shows that these hulls are hand made and not popped out of a mold 20 at a time. The T-top is incredible....very cool. Does the line on the side of the hull effect the hulls overall integrity or is it for aesthetics only? Why is the rub rail cut short of the bow? Nice rig and tight lines.

LOL- there are bigger fish to fry. I had a Striker 44 with about a zillion miles of weld and about a zillion miles under her (beloved) keel. ZERO, ZILCH, NADA, 0 weld failures ever, and I was on the same boat recently NONE. As far as the not pretty welds, I suppose the could run around polishing them all down, make the boat about $500K in labor!

Jay, she is a BATTLESHIP, nice concept, nice execution.

She is a beauty. Tell us about the drift/cruise charactersistics. I love the way my Albemarle sort of hugs the water, it drifts and runs like a much bigger boat. Sort of plows through vs. skipping over the waves. How does the lighter aluminum feel/run? I sure like the indestructable characteristics of the Rock Salt!

Jay, I have been on the BOE Marine plate AL boat and must say that I am impressed. Looks to be a great boat.

How do the ql's perform on a faster boat like that?

If I had the money this would be my offshore boat. Nothing like it for safety. Twenty something years ago, I ran a 70 foot Camcraft (alloy) with triple v - 12's to the oil rigs.
One day the weather was so bad the copters could not change out the crew on the rig.
So as night fell we went out in 30 knot winds and seas at 8 and up to change crews.
Once we were there off loading in that slop with the engines wide open to hold our place in that slop. Think AAA Fuel dragester sounds from the motors. Well old crew was loaded and ready, The seas were so rough it takes a lot of power to navagate.
We headed back on full power and right away, came off a 10 footer and ran over a
steel anchor bouy at full power. It was dark, but these bouys are huge. Checked the
bildge, no leaks, these boats can take more than you can. we ran these boats so hard
they vaberated like a piano wire!

It is no Rock Salt but I got my new 26ft Black Lab from Jay about a month ago and have 50 hours of cod fishing on it. I love to swing a 26 oz jig out wide and slam the side on the way in ... just because I can

Jay and Shawn were great to deal with. The entire build process was open and honest and the few shake down issues were quickly taken care of.

One of my buddies runs a charter boat and says he is going to have to quit coming out with me because if he keeps going it's going to cost him a new alloy boat

Default "Rock Salt"; the name is the kiss of death for me.

Maybe this is a great boat with great innovations, but sorry, from a marketing perspective, Rock Salt is just a poor choice for a name of a boat manufacturer. Seriously..."Rock Salt"?? May be an amazing boat, but the name is horrible. Maybe others have said it, but I could not imagine buying a boat from a manufacturer called "Rock Salt".

I truly wish this manufacture the best of success, but they should change the name.

Does anyone else agree or am I crazy?

I think that Rock Salt is a good and memorable name. I also like Salt Shaker boats?
I guess I am just an old salt at heart.

Congratulations on an absolutely beautiful boat!

A buddy of mine has a 23' Pacific, and if the Rock Salt is the same quality (and it looks to be, or better) it should be bomb-proof. I have an alloy boat as well, and I have to admit I look at the welds on your boat and think they are gorgeous!

Living in Alaska, I find it amusing the number of east-coast fishermen who scoff at the notion of an alloy boat being rugged enough to stand up to the rigors of boating. Come on, guys, these are not your father's riveted aluminum skiffs from the Sears or Montgomery Ward catalog! The funny thing is, we tend to have similar biases against fiberglass boats. Can't beach them on the rocks, will start to crack after a few years, not durable enough, too difficult to maintain, etc...

I'm sure they work fine for what you guys use them for, but I'd take a well-built alloy boat over a 'glass boat any day of the week!

Tight lines guys, whether you drive 'glass or alloy!

First let me apologize for not responding to your questions - I had the auto-notify set and never saw this thread return. Today I just happened to notice it at the top of the Miami Forum and there were a number of unanswered posts!

I'll answer below as I've never figured out how to do multiple quotes in one post....

I'd love to day a second station - never done one before.

A friend just had a custom wooden lobster boat built and instead of a traditional tuna tower had a "crow's nest on a pole" put on - also a great idea!
