Anybody else have one of these? I have had for a year and it is a solid boat. Very heaveee .
I have twin 1990 Johnson 115's which are tired. Just had one powerhead rebuilt, but thinking about a couple of four strokes for running in Galveston Bay, Tx and near coastal. Can anybody tell me what the max. power rating for the hull is? I know there is a plate onboard specifying, I can look next time I go down there. I am concerned about the weight of say two 150 Yam's 4 strokes, and if the transom cutout and scuppers will then be too low. I think the Johnsons weigh about 375# each.. But,by th time you add the aluminum transom mounts, twin batteries, fuel, etc., and so on......
I think she may be a bit underpowered. Takes at least 4500 to 5000 rpm to get on plane and 3500 to 4000 to maintain smooth planing cruising speed of about 28-30 mph. Top speed at 5500 as about 36, but I never run the old engines at that speed for anything but a minute or so. And she really loves fuel!!!
My winter project is to rewire the 12v system. anybody have any advice on that?
I have other topics to exchange with any owners that respond.
I've seen a few of those hulls around, they are tanks.
Your concern about weight on the transom is warranted. I think a single 250 would be a better solution. You will save over 100 pounds from what you have now and still have more power.
You could pick whatever flavor you want, 2 stroke or 4 stroke, and be ready to run that boat for another 15 years.
My neighbor had a CC version of the same boat for about 2 years with a single johnson 200 on it, it wasn't underpowered, but could have definitely used some extra power. My power option of choice would be a single 250, this is what he had in mind before selling it, a good deal on a boat came along before a good deal on a motor did.
Good advice from all. I know a single 250 would make sense and certainly from a cost standpoint. Also would get around the weight issue. It is just that throughout my 20 odd years of boating, I have always wanted to have two engines for obvious "get home" reasons. But, I also know these new 4 strokes are so reliable, that old logic needs to be updated. I have a 25 merc. kicker I could install.
I suppose the number of holes in the transome should not be a worry, can be filled and better be done right! I intend to buy new instruments and controls so I guess I could just replace the steering for a single engine or maybe could use the one I have.
Now that I do have twins, I more fully appreciate the down side, especially with older ones. Like when the powerhead went, I did not have the money to buy new engines, so paid $3,000 to rebuild the powerhead and rest of engine-new vro, etc., now worried what will happen to the other one! I guess that is why I am thinking about the repower for when the next shoe drops.
On the rewire issue, thanks for the advice on labeling the wires. I enjoy the DIY thing, really enjoy working on them more than taking them out! How can I find out more about the labeling thing, details on the right way to do it, anybody know of any books or websites that address specific issue of rewiring the older boat to todays standards? I have found the "12v Bible" etc., books.
I looked around for some electrical boat books but I didnt find any thing that I thought was worth buying. I was trying to find the standard NMMA wrinig colors. (ie bilge -brown wire etc...). The best thing to do is go look at the wiring on a newer boat. That is what I did when I first started rebuilds years ago.
