Default Bob, question for you

When I read the physical requirments am I correct in
how I am reading this, for a first time applicant you can
not use a hearing aid to pass the audio part of the test,
only if you are doing a renewal or upgrade ??

Thanks
Mark

Default Hearing

Here is how the guidelines are stated with regards to hearing. Please note the bold text at the end of this explanation:

Hearing thresholds are checked at 500 Hertz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz and 3000 Hz. The frequency responses for each ear are averaged to give a measure of hearing ability.

ORIGINAL DECK OFFICER LICENSES: An average, unaided hearing threshold of 70 db or less for each ear and functional speech discrimination of at least 90% is acceptable.

RENEWAL OR RAISE OF GRADE: An average unaided hearing threshold of 70 db or less for each ear and/or functional speech discrimination of at least 80% at 55 db for each ear is acceptable.

DECK OFFICER: Hearing aids may be used by applicants to meet the auditory requirements for all renewal or raise of grade transactions. The aided threshold should be 40 db or less in each ear and functional speech
discrimination should be at least 90% at 55 db in both ears. The unaided threshold should be 70 db or less in each ear and functional speech discrimination of at least80% at 55 db, binaural.

Other conditions outside of the ones discussed may be considered for a waiver when recommended by the Officer in Charge Marine Inspection.

so I am correct in what i read then, you cannot use a hearing aid for your inital test to get a capt's license, however if i do fail it i can ask for a wavier,
before signing up for your course is there a way where i can submit the physical part of
my exam first to see if I will pass that or submit waiver before shelling out $ for your course

Thanks
Mark

No worries... Use the email address used in my signature to send me your email address. I will get you a name or two of doctors approved in NJ to administer the physical if you wish. I also have a specialist in processing paperwork in the event you also would want his contact information. He does charge a fee but is the best person I know when it comes to applicatons needing a waiver.
