I would think some doctor statement would be good enough as long as your sight was still reasonable too. I also "think" this applies only to insulin dependant diabetics. Diet controlled should be even easier.

I just got my OUPV license this past summer and I have diabetes. I had to have the AC1 (?) blood test done just before submitting my application packet. I think the test had to be done within the last 30 days from the date you submitted your packet. Your AC1 reading had to be below 8.0. I hope my numbers are correct but to be sure call the Coast Guard REC where you will apply and they will be able to tell you what is acceptable and the time period the test has to be done in. You should not have any problems unless you have had problems in the past with your diabetes. Good luck.
