Hello Jim I live in VA and fish alot in the bay and some off shore and would like to know what would be the best GPS/chartplotter for this area that you don't have to buy several cards or chips for. I was thinking of some type of combo to consider space looking to upgrade fish finder as well. any idea

If you want to save on cartography you will most likely want a C-Map MAX based unit or a Navionics unit. The best of these are Furuno for C-Map and Raymarine for Navionics. This all depends on your budget of course but the Furuno GP7000F is a fine unit. It is an outstanding FF and a very good chartplotter.
