Default Targeting a Position to a Plotter...

Jim, maybe you can help me with this. I have an furuno radar model 1715 and a furuno fish finder model 582l which both have NMEA 0183 interfacing. I have and older model Lowrance gps which I want to upgrade. Can I target a position on a plotter from the radar without having to add a heading sensor? Is a heading sensor only used for map overlay? and lastly, I like the fact that Lowrance plotters use Navionics chips and I would like to get the Platinum + chip. Which new plotter would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

A - You are wanting to target a position on a separate chartplotter, a position that you are pointing to with he cursor on your radar? As far as I know you will need a heading sensor in able to get a lat/lon from a target on your radar. Transferring that target to a chartplotter might work on some units but not others. I just really don't have a good answer. I think its best to call Furuno. I think this will even keep their techs scratching their heads for a while - (888) 834-9330

A - You will want to get any of the HDS series units. They all have pretty much the same capabilities. Just pick your screen size and ducer. This will get you started - http://www.boemarine.com/Support/Art...1-adafce154b8b
