Question Broken Gas/RPM gauge

Hi, this is my first post for my first boat (1992 Scout 172 sf). I've already had two good outtings on the boat and it's easy to use, trailer, fish off of and what not... however, my gas and RPM gauges aren't working since the test run I took it for prior to buying it. I think the hour-long trailer ride home ended up bumping something out of whack. In other words, I've seen them working but now they don't. The needle in the gas gauge is on full and the needle for the RPM gauge had popped out since I got it back to Charleston (bought it in Beaufort). I've looked under the console and the wiring doesn't look too complicated but I still don't want to mess it up. I've checked all of the fuses and have replaced them but that hasn't done anything. The backlight comes on with the RPM gauge when I turn the lights on but thats it (and that's another thing... the nav & anchor lights aren't working and I have a feeling that it's all tied together). Of all the things that work it had to be the stereo system (glad I can listen to some local stations when I run out of gas and get run over at night).

I really would like to figure this problem out but I cannot find a single manual or posting ANYWHERE that can help me.

Please help!

Also, if anyone is willing to offer up some intracoastal waterway fishing spots/techniques for this time of year I'm all ears.

Thanks!

Elliot

Wellllll......you need to trace things back, trace back the things that work and the things that don't work. When you find a common junction where the things that don't work connect to each other then you'll probably find your problem. Hard to diagnose something like this via text over the net.

I just wish there was some kind of manual for this kind of stuff. I guess I'm going to have to look into a few "Electrician 101" sites. The only thing that sucks is that I'm known for forgetting to turn the power sources off... I'm surprised my hair hasn't fallen out. I'm determined to fix it though. I have a cousin who has worked on boats all of his life AND was an electrician (he used to "flip" old boats) yet he keeps putting me off ("Yeah, I'll fix it..."-but then has to do stuff around the house). I understand (especially since I'm married now) but it's frustrating and that's my motivation to be self-reliant and get down and dirty with my own boat.

Thanks Yachtjim and if anyone else has any tricks-of-the-trade then please let me know.

S/F
