Default Garmin Chartplotter-northup, track up, course up?

Just asking which setting most owners prefer. Factory default is north up. Likes or dislikes about the settings. Seems that course up is easier for me to navigate with.

North up for me. Just like reading a paper chart or map... North is always up.

My preferences:

Course up when underway.

North up when studing map or when reviewing which way storms are heading. Course up tends to move the map around while you are sitting still and makes the map hard to read. I wish GPS manufacturers would put a real compass in all GPSs instead of just the small ones.

coincidentally i noticed this last weekend
i switched to north up because the storm direction is easier to read and all of a sudden i was getting returns that weren't there before, with less skipping

I like "course up" while underway because it mimics the view from the helm. If there's a green buoy to port ahead, as viewed from the helm, I like to see it that way on the GPS as well. It may not be traditional as it relates to paper charts, and I think it's prudent to exercise your mind with "North up" in the event that you may have to revert to paper charts, but I view "course up" as a safety improvement that decreases the chance of navigational error.

What he said.

I tried it with the north up for reasons stated above, but couldn't ever get used to it, and spent more time trying to figure out where I was in relation to the map. I thgink i could see where "north up" may work better in an actual navigation, "how do I get to somewhere 100 miles from here" situation though.

Same here, course up when running and north up when I need to get my bearings

Course up, for me. But now I'll have to run a comparison while watching the weather, in North up. Thanks, for heads up.

North up, I can always use the "high-way" view if I want a change.

The captain who delivered my boat and taught me how to use all the systems used north up so I just stuck with it. Simply looks like a moving paper chart. I tried course up and. . . I guess it's just habit but I found my self turning my head left and right to go back to what I was used to.
