GPS antenna too close to VHF antenna?

Installed a Garmin 2206 and the instructions say to mount gps antenna at least 3 feet from vhf antenna. What effect does the vhf have on the gps? My other unit had a built in antenna next to the vhf antenna and I never noticed any effect. Is it just this model?

My Standard gps also said to mount gps antenna 3 feet from anything that transmits.

There is a nice diagram in the Consumers Marine Electronics catalog showing "Antenna Mounting Guidelines". It does show 1 meter spacing between the VHF and the GPS antennas.

I think the concern is that the GPS signal could be compromised when transmitting on the VHF.

If you cannot maintan the 1 m spacing, it may be possible to mount the GPS antenna lower than the radiating portion of the VHF antenna.

Mine are within inches of each other, but the GPS is flush mounted in the hardtop so there is no interference
