Default VHF Antenna Install?????

Never done this before. Just bought a new antenna, broke the other one. the new one has the cable split at the end with what look likes speaker wire in two layers. But to hook it up to the VHF it has a special screw on. Like a large cable screw on. I bought a non- solder connection. DO I keep the cable connection and connect the new cable to the old one using the same hookup to the VHF?

A non-solder connection for a VHF antenna is nothing but trouble. Do youself a favor and stop by a marina with a marine electronics shop and pay the 20 bucks to have them solder on the correct connector.

Are you sure you have a VHF antenna? I can think of some advantages to that type of wire but if you use a solderless connection you are more likely to have corrosion issues later.

If you go with this connector, try tinning over the ends of the wire either before or after putting on the connector. If there is room for a ring tab, then use them and tin the wire ends at the crimp.

Good luck!

If you would tell us what antenna you bought and even show us a picture of the "end" we might be able to give you real advice.
