Connecting ICOM 504 to Garmin 176 GPSMAP Unit

Can use a little help please.

I installed my new ICOM 504 and figured out how to hook it up so my GPS (Garmin 176) is communicating with the radio. I connected the Garmin NEMA-out to the ICOM-in and connected the shielding of the Garmin out to my ground bus. It's working.

Out on the water I sent an MMSI call to another boat. When he replied, he was able to see me on his plotter, but I didn't see him on mine nor did I see his lat/lon displayed. Question: do I need to connect the ICOM NEMA-out to the Garmin NEMA-in as well? Do I ground the Garmin-in shielding wire like the other?

You need to connect the NMEA out on the VHF to the NMEA in of the plotter. The plotter must be capable of receiving a DSC position (not sure about the Garmin 176)

Looking at the manual, it doesn't look like the 176 supports DSC.

You should be able to receive your friend's position on the ICOM and see his lat/lon, just not have it pop up automatically on the Garmin.
