Default Heading Sensor Location

I have a Raymarine Autopilot with Heading Sensor. However, I get a large deviation in heading (+17 degrees). I understand that there is probably some interference causing this, but I have limited options on where to put the sensor. Does anyone know how critical it is to have it mounted right in the centerline of the boat? Would 6-12" off centerline cause problems? (I have a 23TE McKee Craft and it is currently mounted inside the console on the front wall near the top.)

6"-12" should not make a difference. Mine is offset at least that much. I relocated it last season & went from 12deg to 5deg by moving it out of the the console & into a bilge compartment

That said. myu next project is to install a KVH heading sensor to hopefully correct the poor performance of my RM A/P

My RM Heading Sensor works great with my RM S1000 auto pilot and chart overlays on my E120 are on the money. Off center location should not be a problem. Be sure it is in a location protected from the weather (water).
