Default Garmin Cartography/Mapping

I recently purchased a boat that came with a 2015 Garmin 7610 xsv installed. I have noticed, after updating the software, that the mapping and cartography are very poor when I compare them to my previous head unit, which used navionics. It is my understanding that Navionics and Garmin had a falling out and the two products no longer work together due to software changes on Garmin. I rely heavily on good contour maps and at this point I am ready to buy a second head unit, radar, autopilot, etc. and I want to keep the brand name the same across all products for networking purposes, and I prefer to keep the Garmin and NEMA backbone already installed but, if I can't get cartography and mapping better than what Garmin is currently offering, I am thinking of just dumping the 7610 and redoing everything with a different brand name. My question is: some people have told me that the Navionics Platinum+ card will still work, but once Navionics is installed you cannot update the Garmin, is this true? What card would you use if none are offered for Garmin on the Navionics website?

I had the exact same problem, had dual garmin 3210s for years and loved them sold them and bought dual 7610xsv's and hated the mapping was terrible for the areas I typically fish so dumped them and went with simrad for a few reasons one being the ability to choose different maps. I don't think you can use a navionics card with garmin at all if you could I don't think that would be one of the big complaints many people have with garmin

you can't use navioincs but you can do your own mapping if youre not happy with the built in maps. if you haven't done a map update since 2015 you are also almost 2 years behind on mapping updates. the update may or may not include improvements for your area

What other problems did you notice? I have yet to truly get comfortable with this unit and have yet to figure out what all is lacking. I noticed the cartography and mapping problems while trying to figure out how to get all my waypoints swapped.

Does the software update also update the maps or are they separate? I did the software update.

Hoping someone finds a resolution to this. I have a 7612sxv and just bought g2 vision cards. It didn't change the contours at all!

What card is gonna give us navioinics like contours? As a free diver I need to know if I'm in 38ft or 58ft within reason.

At first I thought it was just me but after research it seems to be a common problem that many people are disappointed with and also depending on your area CMOR maps already has mapping out for some areas and those maps are awesome supposedly they are expanding regularly and IMO i think they are going to be setting the bar when it comes to mapping

But cmor doesn't seem to have garmin chart compatibility.

That's what I was saying that it might be beneficial to switch brands

Note that with BlueChart mapping, be sure you are viewing the Fishing Chart for the detailed contours and not the Navigation Chart.

Which added chart card gives the best contours?

G2 vision
HD
Some other acronym?
I can't get it straight

Garmin BlueChart G2 Vision, and also you can use the Quickdraw feature when you are fishing and create your own contours.

When I was unhappy I called garmin and they told me the bluechart g2 vision and the bluechart HD are essentially the same charts but the vision has a few added features like satellite overlay, mariners eye, fisheye view.
Now they also did ask what year they were from and said there might have been some map changes from 2015 to 2016 and if I was the original owner they could send me an SD card with the newest maps but since I wasn't I would have to purchase it for like 150-160$ and said there might not even be any changes to my area
A friend of mine had 2016 models and his maps matched mine so it wouldn't have made a difference
And I don't think a software up date up dates the maps

I would suggest checking to see just what maps you have selected in the menu. The G2 Vision has enhanced bathymetrics

Make sure your selecting the right maps on your machine. Contours are on fishing chart.

I'm not sure this is at all correct. At least not according to anybody I've talked to at Garmin. Bathy detail reportedly the same in G2, G2 HD and G2 Vision.

I have new Garmin gear and I'm very disappointed in bathymetric detail. 7 foot contours on the fishing charts vs. 1 foot contrours with Navionics.

Bummed.

You do not get any extra contour lines with the premium map cards. You get all kinds of other add-ons, but no extra contour lines.

In my area, the built-in Garmin G2 charts are at least a good as the Navionics everywhere I have checked. Both are off in some places and fine in others. Garmin is better in some places and Navionics better in others. Same is true for the Lakes charts, although, Garmin wins there by a good bit on my favorite lakes. Garmin has fewer big errors so far.

As Todd said, turn on the Fishing chart if you want the detailed contour lines over and above the nav chart data.
