Default Stereo Speaker Recommendations

The cones on my 4 year old Sony XS-MP1621 speakers seem to be falling apart. Surprised as they are mounted on the underside of my hardtop and are never directly exposed to water. Looking for replacement recommendations. I don't have an amp and I don't attempt to listen to the stereo while underway. Just some easy low volume listening to classic rock while waiting for the fish to bite or motoring around the ICW. Current speakers are 6.5" diameter in a 5" cutout, so I would hope to find a similar size for easy replacement. Looking for something in the $100-$150 per pair.

I have a set of JBL MS6200's and like them just fine. They play loud when needed without distortion and have a decent low end to them. They run about $130 or so from Amazon. Good overall speaker, I'd recommend them.

These would be my choice. Coming in at $174.99 for the pair but if you talk to some of the sponsors here you may can get a better deal.

Other than that everything else is pretty much he same. Just go buy a pair and be done.

Thanks guys. Sounds like Wetsounds has the majority.

We have closeout pricing on the previous gen Wet Sounds speakers and we have their newest stuff on the way to us now. Let me know if we can help.

Wet Sounds SW65. Just over your budget but worth it because of the performance and durability.

4 years is pretty good. Without an amp you might just consider another round with the Sonys. I like those speakers personally. The sound is pretty good for the money and they push easy without an amp. I've had them on three boats now.

The positive comments about wet sounds initially had me convinced, but when I looked at this review, wet sounds came out at the bottom, while the polk speakers which are currently in the $120 range at Amazon came out at the top.

Bottom line is that review is designed to generate revenue. It is completely bogus. Products were not tested. The reviewer is completely clueless about audio. The information used to rate the speakers is the same information the manufacturers generate in their own brochures and on-line sites.
Now independent of the review, the Polk Audio 651UM is a really good sounding speaker. I rate it a solid third place behind the JL Audio and the Wetsounds.

Call Odin at Earmark Audio. He is very knowledgeable and has great pricing on all brands. I just ordered from him on monday.

Well if you ever get through MD just stop into our showroom to hear them for yourself. It is for sure the best sound experience on a boat.

I have the Polk 651UMs and they sound incredible. I rate them higher than comparable speakers from JL and Wetsounds. They're also much less money although that did not play into my decision.

That's a rip off. You can get the newer versions of those for $64 on ebay. I had them on my 3 SH boats and they really suck. Pretty clear but no bass at all and not that loud.

If you really want to save money since you aren't using an amp the Kenwood Marine 6.5 really sound good and plenty of bass for a 6.5 speaker. Can get 4 for under $100. They sounded way better than the JBL's I replaced. The Fusion 6.5 on Ebay for under $100 sound good to. They got plenty of thump.
