Default Question for Glen E about marine electronic prices

I can't understand those sky-high prices for marine electronics. Especially fish finders and plotters.

Doesn't matter brand name.

Compare for example:

Humminbird 987 C cost around $1,999 USD

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...0001/427/140/3

and for allmost same price you can buy 62" 62HM95 brand new model Toshiba DLR HI definition TV !!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...0001/427/140/3

Technology and electronics inside pretty much similar as i know.

Can't get it??

Take the Toshiba and install it in your console. Let us know how long it works in a marine environment.

Besides giving us pleasure, boats are specifically here on this planet so that you have to spend lots of money. If you don't want to spend the money, sit at home and watch the TV.

it's all economy of scale - there are lot more tv's made than the price of specialzed electronics for a few million people vs hundreds of million tv consumers...IMO

Step by step,
I am born on the coast, and i am on the boat from my first year 1956 ( thanks to my father), so boating is in my blood and it will be to the end of my life.

Lots of commercial fisherman in this area use laptops with any problems for 3-4 years in combination with black box and transducer (15-19" screen, way higher resolution and better color (mostly).

For me boats are not "specifically here on this planet" it is pretty much afordable for everyone.
But if some boaters think they special, I have no comment on that one.
I have F/F and all those toys, but for me............. they to expensive.

Can accept definition "Economy of scale" but still.............

Good laptop............800-1000
Black box................250-300
Transducer.............400-600
Cables,
conectors,etc.........100-300
GPS receiver...........150-300

Total around $1700-2500 for F/F and GPS with 19" hi res. 32bit color screen................
