If this has been discussed, I beg your forgiveness. But, I need to know what is the best digital camera for under a grand. My Cannon A80 is great, but cannot get up close without losing quality. I want good fish and ski pictures.
If your looking for point and shoot, I strongly recommend the Sony DSC-P- 200. It is super compact, 7.2 meg and has very, very minimal shutter delay. I had a Cannon G6 which drove me crazy with the extra long shutter delay. I dumped the G6 at a big loss on ebay and could not be happier with the Sony. It has a super macro mode for close-up's. I purchased the Sony DSC-P-150 which has been replaced with the DSC-P-200 (larger viewing screen) It's only weakness is it only zooms out to 3X, which is the norm on most of the digital point and shoot cameras. You could by three of the Sony's for a grand!!!!!!Ed
If you are serious about quality and would consider a digital SLR, we have a Nikon D70 that is available for purchase.
The body has received the Nikon firmware upgrades to be the equivalent of the current D70s model and is priced at $650. We also have the following Nikon lenses in immaculate condition with zero physical defects:
Nikkor 70-300 ED priced at $250
Nikkor 24-120 VR priced at $425
Look at models from Canon, Sony, and Panasonic that have 10x-12x optical zoom and electronic image stabilization. Price range is about $400-700. The Sony and Panasonic are a little more responsive than the Canon as far as shutter response goes. You could get into an SLR, but it will cost big bucks for a telephoto lens with electronic stabilization.
I have an older Olympus that I keep coming back to It is the C3000. They have made about 6 upgrade models since I got mine. It is very simple to use. I have taken a lot of zoom and macro shots with it and it has performed very well. I would look at the newer version of that. (not sure what the model would be). I bought my wife a new Kodak for Christmas it has an incredible zoom. I think it is pretty much the same as the high end Sony. They look identical and when I purchased hers I compared the features and couldn't find much difference. Except that the Sony uses a Zeiss lense. I personally have owned about 4 digitals over the years but I always go back to my Olympus and it has always taken great pictures. I think that simpler is better. I won a DiMage 7 Minolta and didn't care for it at all because it was so complex. I'm sure it is a great camera but it isn't nearly as simple to use as my old Olympus.
Good Luck!!

I'm Ready!!!
I have a G3 Canon that is my old reliable and takes superb pictures. However, hold off on any new Canon camera until you Google "Canon E18 error" and read about the alleged defective design in many newer models and the class action lawsuit.
Thanks everyone. I have an olympus, but is the entry level and is ok. I have the Cannon A80 and like it, but the shutter speed is miserable. It takes 10 seconds between shots and, the quality is good only close up. Feedback from all friends points to Nikon SLR. I was going to look at the lower model Nikon (which I think is a D50 or 60, not sure. The D 70, new is way out of range. Stretch, I don't know anything about the Nikons yet, but if yours is similar to what is out now, I might be interested. Please e mail me direct (I don't know how to work the pm) at tomandlaura@bellsouth.net with some of the info so I can make a decision.
Thanks everyone for your help.
Tom
tlhmiami,
Have had the Nikon D70 for about 1 1/2 years now and absolutely love it. Understand that the newer D50 has most of the features of the D70 for a little less $$$. Good luck in your search.

If you're looking for clear, crisp fishing and skiing ACTION pics, first thing you need to look at is shutter speed. then go from there...good luck. I spent a long time and ended up biting the bullet and no regrets.
mymojo is right...the Nikon D50 is a sweet camera for the money..
I will have to "third" what Mymojo said. I have a D70, bought it before the D50 came out. I love the camera! I do recommend that you purchase an external flash. It will greatly improve the quality of your pixs in lower light conditions. My friend bought the D50. In general, unless you are really into cameras and tweaking settings, you will do well by saving a few bucks to buy the D50 - or look into the used D70.
The SLR's will allow you to change lenses, which is a nice feature. Also, the D70 snaps multiplepixs really fast - just make sure you get a card that can write quickly. I took the D70 to my daughter's winterconcert. The pixs from the D70 (w/ flash)came out very nice, and I was sitting way in the back. My friends, all of whom were sitting much closer (including the front row), all had very poor pixs.
i will have to echo the ease and versitility of the Nikon D50. I brought mine just prior to christmas. I also purchased an external flash and a long lens. The pictures have been awesome. I also own a fuji finepix 4800 which is a very good compact digital for the money at that time. You can't beat the SLR lens for capturing light and stopping action with virtually no digital delay.
I recently purchased a Canon Rebel XT SLR, its by far the best camera I've had. Only had it a few weeks now but love it.
If anyone's interested I have a Nikon 8700 coolpix I would like to get rid of, in A+ condition its a 8mp point and shoot, no CF card but I have the original box papers ect., and would toss in a carry case, you will need a CF card. PM me if interested.
Has anyone actually seen the canon e18 problem, or have first-hand knowledge of it. I'm interested in a 12X zoom and I'm thinking of getting the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 or waiting for the Canon PowerShot S3 IS. Don't want to wait if the e-18 problem is widwpread??
I have the Panasonic Lumix 12 X zoom.
I'm not yet familiar with all the things this thing can do but untill now i'm very happy with it.
The zoom and the stabilizer are amazing.
Only one thing: it's to big to fit in a pocket like most of the others do.
