Default Temp Sensor

Need a little help here...I have installed a Raymarine E120 with a inhull transducer. Problem with the inhull transducer is that you don't get water temperature readings. What are my best options for reading temp...I do have the new command link gauges on the boat...but haven't used them yet...anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

Ray Marine makes a temp sensor that plugs in to the back of your E or C series. (sea talk) I mounted mine on the transom (yes, you have to drill a hole in the boat) and it works great.

Set up your tool bar to include temp and you are done

Ray also makes a bronze thru-hull transducer with temp and speed (although the paddlewheels used for speed are pretty much useless and break). The temp ducer hooks up to the DSM by using a y-connecter shared with the shoot-thru ducer. Temp will display on the toolbar after configuring it to show up. At one time, you also could plot temperature over time on the display, but that feature is no longer available, which stinks and was one reason why I bought the Ray ducer instead of a stand alone Dytek temp gauge (which can't be beat for accuracy and reliability).

The Ray product number is E66072. We paid about $175. The Dyteks start at about $250.

Disantoda refers to a transom mount unit above that shoudl do the trick, although the only transom mount temp ducer I found on Ray's site does not work with the dsm 300. If there is such a beast, go with that.

Any transom mount will require a few small holes in the transom to mount the bracket that won't be a problem if you install correctly (search here for proper mountign technique). I don't think you mind those types of holes - you're just trying to avoid a big thru-hull hole in the bottom of the boat. If you don;t want any holes, *maybe* you could fashion some sort of clamp on bracket, but I wouldn't trust it for a second.

I also found this site that has an NMEA compatible temp transducer in case Ray (Airmar) doesn't make one:
http://www.marinecomp.com/new_page_17.htm

Not sure if the E-series can accept these NMEA sentences, but it may be worth a look.

The only hole you have to drill in your transom is for the cable. (I think it's a 1/4 inch) The sensor mounts to the transom, but you still have to get the cable to the display.

It's a pretty small hole. If you don't want to drill a hole you can run the cable up the back of your transom and under the gunnels to the main display. The only problem is that you will see it.

I have the DSM 300 w. 1000watt transducer (in hull). I marked the bottom offshore in 3900 ft at one of the rigs last week! Temp sensor worked great also.

I've found the Dytek's to be far more accurate and way more sensitive.. I've seen water changes on the Dytek change 200 - 300 yards before the transducer temp would catch-up, and would show the same when running out of the hotter water..To me the Dytek is the way to go..But the transducer is good for a back-up
