Is it possible to test a transducer to assure it's working while the boat is on the trailer? The fishfinder and thru-hull transducer is presently installed in the boat and I was wondering if I can check the system to be sure it is working while the boat is on the trailer in the yard? If so, could someone explain.
Well, the thing is ticking loud enough to scare the dog out of the yard. Can't remember if it was doing that before I messed with the connection. I hope it is working again, that would be great. I'm really not excited about spending a couple grand on a new sounder right now.
It is an old Si-Tex unit. It does have an 8" color CRT screen. Si-Tex just doesn't offer support on this unit any longer. It worked fine when I sea-trialed the boat. I did overhaul work on the hull that lasted right at a year and it wouldn't work after that. The display would come on and the water temp. would even display, but you wouldn't get a depth reading. I didn't mess with it much because I knew it wasn't long before needing replacement. The need for a bottom machine is greater now than my finances, so I messed around with the unit yesterday. Looked at the display/ducer connection hoping the tag on the wire giving the info about the ducer would still be there and it was not. The connection was a little corroded and dry so I blew it and cleaned it off some. Turned it on in the yard and messed with it a little. When I turn the gain up you get a thicker and thicker area of feedback on the display. Now, I just can't remember if it was doing that before. I don't think adjusting the gain changed the display any before I messed with the connection. That's what got me to thinking that hopefully the dry, corroded connection was the problem. I might go dump the boat in the local watering hole tomorrow to check it out, if this weather cooperates. Today, I am going to the boat show in Baton Rouge to look around and see if I can ID a connection like I need for my FF.
Have fun at the show. I will probably be there tomorrow. Corrosion can do that. If the screen changed with the gain moving up, the transducer should be responding. Let me know how it works tomorrow.
Thanks TTaxi, I didn't know that. I only left it on for about 30 or 40 seconds.
Swamppro, there was a lot of bass boats, quite a few muffin pan boats, and some go-fast cigarette boats. THere was a 24 foot Bay Champ with twin 175 Optimaxes. That's right, 2 of em.
There was one Prokat 2860. Twin 250 Yamaha's. I have more room in my boat, but this one likely has a better ride in the rough.
