x2 on this.. If I were to make a parallel... What makes the black rifle (AR15 and it's mil spec brethren) so great is all the aftermarket interchangeability. I can understand why Garmin is trying to close the door but if managed properly they could make money on licensing other mapping products into their units and broaden their market share. Didn't apple eventually allow google maps back on their closed architecture? This was a major point of contention
with one of the past software upgrades.

Sounds like Simrad is going to be the way to go in the future for me.

Sooooo.... Despite all the banter, does anyone know if the update (ver 4.0 for 1040 class) kills the navionics or not?

Everyone is waiting for someone else to try first. It is friggin freezing up here and it will be while before I crawl up under the shinkwrap to do any updates. I wonder if both units need to have the same firmware version?

Doesn't Someone have the previous version of firmware so they can update, try it, and rollback the firmware if it doesn't work?

The last firmware update I did, emailed Garmin with questions, they said a firmware update could not be rolled back.
I haven't tried it, but who knows. It's only hardware and software.

So what is supposed to happen if you place a Navionics card in a Garmin with the 4.0 update? Will it just not read the card, or will it screw up the unit?

Your unit will melt like mission impossible

It is not in Garmins best interest to damage their own equipment. The unit will probable try to verify a check sum in the code on SD/software, if it can't validate it will not read it.

Done. Navionics still works. The only thing I noticed sitting in the yard was the unit seemed a little buggy when using the Nav chip. It froze one time and seems to refresh slowly but that may be me being worried. I'll have to try it on the water to see how it really works. Either way I can still use it. This is on a 70DV.

did you try the nav chip before the upgrade ?
curious to see if the buggy deal was there b4 the upgrade ?
did the upgrade seem to help any other functions ?
my navionics chip is painfully slow now in my 1040xs, as compared to my garmin g2 vision card

Updated my 4212 today. It updated my AP, nema 2000 and couple of other things. Loaded the navionics and copied the file with no problem. Before the update I was using it but I was having issues with it. Depth was off and I was lose my signal. I had none of that today. Works very good.

FYI confirmed. It appears that release is the software that will block the SonarCharts for Garmin card for third party software

So does it block the maps or not? Is there enough interest for someone to create custom Garmin firmware? I'm typing this from a jail broken iPhone, so it is done with other devices already.

Worked perfect before the upgrade. I'll test again when I get back on the water.

Well if Garmin does indeed break the Navionics chip from working with their equipment that does it for me ever buying another Garmin product.
