Default Minn-Kota Co-Pilot problems

I have the Minn-Kota trolling motor with the "Co-Pilot" feature, which enables control of the troller's speed and direction with a wireless remote control device. I am plagued with an intermittent problem in that the troller does not respond to the left turn signal from the remote device. I have a second remote device, and the problem is apparent using the second device as well. I have concluded that the problem is in the receiver, but having checked all wiring and connections, I am unable to locate the problem for a permanent fix. The problem usually disappears with successive retrieval/lowering of the motor out of and back into the water, so I am guessing that it's wiring-related somewhere.

Anybody out there have any experience or theories here? It is out of warranty.

Thanks,
Marsh

Sounds to me like some type of wiring problem, never heard of that before.
Check Lowrance's web site and find a repair shop and I am sure they can cure this for you

I've had the same prob, but only on rare occasions. Seems if i press REAL hard it will work. not sure why it does it. try replacing the battery with a fresh one maybe?

Thanks for the replies, gents...I have contacted Minn-Kota (not sure why Lowrance was mentioned), and they simply referred me to a local repair shop. The shop had no clue, and suggested trial-and-error parts replacement. I can't argue with that approach, given the facts. I have eliminated the batteries as a potential cause: I have two separate remotes, bought at different times, and the malfunction is the same regardless of which of my two remotes I am using. My theory is that it results from a wiring fault, but I cannot narrow it down further than that. Could be the large coiled wire from the base unit to the power head. Or it could be the small wire from the base unit to the steering motor. Or it could be an internal wiring fault. I'll try pressing the button REAL hard, to see if that helps. My bet right now is on a wiring fault somewhere.

If the problem goes away by repeatedly raising and lowering the motor is there some sort of "contact" that must be made when the motor is in the lowered position in order for the turning functions to "make" and work??????????

Does the motor work okay if you use the foot control?

Bailey:
Motor turns right OK...just won't turn left. Symptoms persist, then randomly disappear, usually after raising/lowering the motor successive times. There are no "contact" points.

Hotspot:
Never used the foot control, but guess I'm gonna have to test it. That would be the next thing to try: will it turn left using foot control when remote control fails? Weather permitting, I'm on the water Saturday.

If the foot control works okay, that means the problem is in the Copilot add on module. Let us know how it comes out. I have a suspicion that it will still not work properly with the foot control either.

I have the same problem with mine, what I do and works so far is...unplug the co-pilot and plug it back
in. I read somewhere that they were having issue's with the plug beacuse the pins are so small that the
slightest bit of corrosion makes them act up. The foot pedal will work also.

Went out on the water today. Same sporadic problem with my troller: balky left turn. Left turn malfunctioned using foot pedal also. Not sure what that implies, though.

I did catch 8 bass, though. Great day...just me and the fishin' dog. Blue sky, and flat water.

Based on what you said about the foot control, the problem is not the Co Pilot.

It sounds like a loose wire in the main unit. If you are mechanically inclined, take it apart and fix it myself. It is probably something simple.

Default minn kota copilot problems

My copilot worked great for the first 6 or 7 months. Then it started hanging up in a turn (both directions left and right). As you can imagine , this made sneaking up on fish impossible. The foot pedal seems to work fine every time. This has been going on for 18 months. I have already had it in the shop once. They said it was fixed. I tried it on the trailer and had no problems. Once I got in the water, it started doing the same thing only worse. The motor is now out of warranty. I have always liked Minn Kota. This trolling motor cost me over $1,200. I am almost ready to try a Motor Guide product. Any suggestions?

Default Minn Kota Problem

I had the same problem. Take the main connectors apart and clean the connection pins and use the proper electrical grease before connecting. I brushed the pins with a wire brush first to get a clean connection. It worked for me.

I forgot to mention mine is a Riptide ST 24 volt 70 lb thrust. I use it in salt, brackish and fresh water. Mostly fresh though.

I had problems similiar with mine and as already mentioned a fresh battery in the remote, and clean plug-in eliminated most of the issues. I did have to replace the remote about a year ago.

After 1200 hours with Minn Kota trolling motors, I've experienced a number of faults. This one also. It was the coil cord on the older 70AP unit. This is not intuitive as the steering motor receives its directional power commands directly from the control board. But the five pin "bus" that comes in from the copilot also goes up the the steering head where it gets mag compass info. Evidently, the coil cord intermittently shorted (or opened) that bus giving me and the motor fits.

If you have two remotes and the problem persists with both, it's not the remote.

Stowing and deploying the motor might "make and break" any coil cord defect.
