Default Uniden UM525

I bought a Uniden UM525 and WHAMx4 about 1 month ago. I like it but, the audio started cutting in and out on the main radio and I had to send it in for repair. Uniden tells me to expect a month... Anyone else have this new radio? Any problems?

I should add their Customer Service SUCKS! The agent I talked with could have cared less...I had to drag info out of him, including how to return the radio for repair!

Another example of a company that has gone down the tubes.

Uniden wireless phones, scanners, cbs, etc. ALL suck ! I have not had any Uniden product turn out to be even half-assed reliable for a few years now. Not like some of their communications products of 20 years ago.

Considering that you may need that POS radio to save your life some day, chuck it now, and replace it with an ICOM or SH.

Uniden= inferior components, inferior products and inferior performance. Did you expect their customer service to be better?

Thanks for answering the questions I was going to post regarding Uniden. I think I'll stick with the tried and true SH Quest+ for my next boat.

Well...I just read the online Work Order for my radio repair. The Uniden tech says "Unit performs within manufacturers specs. No repair made". It's now in the mail headed back to me...still broke! Never, EVER buy a Uniden product!!!

Update:

The radio arrived back yesterday from the Uniden Repair Facility and has more problems than when I sent it in. The radio still cuts in and out and now is in constant alarm mode for Low Voltage (even though its getting a full 13.8!!).

This POS is headed for eBay and I'm going to buy a new radio.

Did you check the wiring harness and also the antenna connection? I experienced similar problems with a Standard Horizon and it turned out to be the harness. I didn't include the harness when the radio went in for repair and, as a result, the radio checked out fine.

Sorry to hear that. I hope this doesn't happen to me. I bought and installed one last weekend. I was going to buy an Icom 502 but I let the salesguy talk me out of it. He said some of the engineers at Standard left the company and went to Uniden to make this radio.

It has a ton of features, which sold me as well. I like the DCS-D feature, the hailer etc. This is the most bang for the buck in a radio I have seen in awhile.

I installed the radio last weekend. I'm installing the antenna and hooking up the unit to my GPS this weekend.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes. I hope I don't have a lemon as I threw all of the packing material and assorted stuff away.

I've got the Uniden 525 and wham4 cordless mike on my Sea Cat and it works great. Also have an Icom 402 mounted right next to it which also works fine. I run them both on different channels. Good luck with the new radio. For a test, hook the new one up to the same connections as the Uniden and let us know the result.

I'm thinking of getting one of these with my tax return. Does anyone else have anything to add?

Thats true Saltwaters from what I heard about them leaving Standard. I think the 525 is not a performer but paying a 100 dollars less than the (my favorite )icom 502(comparable features). not to mention the previous years uniden radios were horrible the 525 is the only one that has interested me

Last season, I was having problems with my 525. Everything was fine on the receiving side, but when I tried to broadcast on full power, it would draw too much power. It turned out that the previous owner had put a higher amperage fuse in there (not good).

I contacted Uniden and for $50 + $10 return shipping, they provided a new (remanufactured) unit. I would give them a call to see if they are still doing this with this particular radio. I would have just replaced the radio, but I have the WHAMx4 wireless system with it and there were no other new radios compatible with this system.

Check your fuse size. What is it? What wire size is run to the unit?

Fuse size has nothing to do with "drawing too much power." A bigger fuse does not cause the radio to draw more power, it limits the amount that can be drawn. What size fuse did he put in?

I removed and pitched a 625 a couple of months ago. It was a backup to my Icom. Replaced the U with a SH 1700 which has not been installed yet. My experience with the U service and support people was terrible.

Personally, I would not purchase another one of their products. Ever.

My unit was damaged. The reason the fuse didn't blow was because there was a 20 amp fuse in there. If i'm not mistaken, the correct fuse should have been more like 7amp or so. If the correct fuse was installed, it would have blown when keying the mike.

The other think I noticed at the time that may or may not have been a coincidence, was that my antenna was shorting out. I checked this with an ohm meter at the plug.

I have since replaced the antenna and have used the remanufactured ratio for the past season.

I had a bad experience with a Uniden 525 as well--failed twice on me. Like others, I've switched. Now have a Garmin vhf200 integrated with my Garmin network. So far, so good. The integration is slick.
