Default Question about installing an hour meter on an outboard

Bought a new hour meter and wanted to install it on my boat to monitor engine hours. The meter did not come with any instructions. I assume you would hook it up to the key switch but I can't see any way to attach it there. Would you recommend that I hook it up to any of the gauges that turn on with the key switch? The only negative possibility I see is that the switch could be on supplying power without the engine actually being on. Where do the rest of you hook up your hour meters on outboards?

Thanks, in advance.

Ron

Hook it (the hour meter plus & neg wires) to the outboard gauge pos & neg. They come on when you turn the key on & will power the meter.

I hooked mine to the fuel guage positive lead. It comes on when the key is on, yes, but that usually precedes start up immediately. FWIW, I think this is true of most installations - including those from the factory...

One other thing. I don't know what kind of switch that you bought, but I bought a Faria and it came with instructions. The Faria instructions are also available at the Faria web site.

Thanks to all who replied. Looks like an easy hook up.
