Default NMEA 2000 reverse compatible w/ NMEA 0183 electronics? (re: Standard Horizon Intrepid LE)

I've got a Standard Horizon Intrepid LE (GX1265S) VHF. The DSC function connects to the GPS's NMEA output using NMEA 0183 language. The next GPS I want has a NMEA output, but it uses NMEA 2000 rather than NMEA 0183. Is NMEA code reverse compatible so that I can take advantage of the DSC with the new GPS?

You might be a little confused. NMEA 183 is the protocol, think of it as the data sentence format of 1’s and 0’s and the speed in which they zip between units.

NMEA 2000 is a std for a self-configuring, multi-directional, exchange of data AND COMMANDS using a multi-master network. Think of it as a network without a hub…everything daisy-chain plugs into everything else and they all display and commend each other…at hi-speed.

The shared data between units on a MNEA 2000 network still uses the NMEA 183 protocols.
