Default Garmin 162 Q??

I have one and wondered, what is needed to transfer maps and stuff from my PC to the unit.
I know the data cable, but does that cable provide phantom power and do I need an antenna hooked up to run the unit?

Has anyone got this unit and done this?

I am working on learning the program "expertGPS" and wanted to download the waypoints and maps I create into my GPS.

Anyone familiar with this software?

Thanks!
Gary

assuming you can take the unit off the boat, hook up the data cable to the back of the unit, hook it to the PC, and then plug it into the wall. then power up the unit and run it in simulator mode (do not need antenna)

to "transfer maps & stuff" you'll need the mapsource mapping products from garmin on cd-rom
the gpsmap 162 has limited memory (2 meg if i recall correctly) so you can't load up too much, but bluechart or us topo maps in your home area should fit

as far as the "expertGPS" software, i have no odea if they will interface with your unit...i would be surprised if you can transfer maps from it

Well, I can take if off the boat but I need the cables.
As far as expertGPS, I am told it will work.
I just download the area chart which they have and the waypoints will go in seperate and overlay that chart.
I think that's the way... LOL!!!

Might just get the bluechart, but I think it's nuts to have to pay for the CD then pay extra to use ALL the info on it every time you want another area.

I have a garmin 162 with the bluechart cd.
you can transfer data back and forth. maps, waypoints, routes and tracks.
its very easy to do.
I had to send my gps back to garmin to be repaired one time. they could not recover all the info i had
stored in it. over 400 waypoints. it was basically a new unit when i got it back.
i had my waypoints backed up on the bluechart cd so when i got it back i transferred them from the cd to the gps. only took a few seconds to do it. would have taken hours to manually put them all back in.

i have never used the expertGPS so i don't know about that.

the area that is unlocked on my cd is from tampa to new orleans, so it covers pretty much anywhere i would go.
