you will never go wrong with standard horizon or ICOM. Based on testing, we know that 5W is not the same across manufacturers. ICOM and Standard always seem to have the best range in tests. Why go somewhere else??

I"ll second the vote for Standard Horizon handhelds. I have an HX350S that gets lots of use. The rechargeable battery gives me about 12 hrs of use in scan mode along with 3-4 transmissions per hour.
I have the Ray101 hand held VHF and I love it. It is the best hand held I have ever had. The unit last an exceptional long time on a charge. The best thing is that when these rechargeable batteries finally give up, I can go to Radio Shack or Walmart and buy replacements instead of going back to the manufacture and paying almost the radios price for a replacement battery. I have to give this radio two thumbs up.
The only thing I am not sure I like about it is the belt clip. It's kind of a love /hate thing. You have to turn the radio upside down to get if off the belt clip. But on the other hand, you can't loose the radio by getting it caught on some thing.
