Smile Hummingbird 999

the HB 999 comes with a sidescan transducer, do you have to add an additional downscan transducer for effective downscan? Anyone familiar with this unit? Any alternate recommendations in the $1000-1500 price range? I really value the downscan more than the SS. Its going on a 19' KW cc.

The more I research sonar devices the more I get confused. I almost bought the garmin 740s yesterday when it was on sale at WM but that unit is being replaced and it supposedly had questional downscan abilities unless you go with a 1KW transducer > $700 or 800, additional. Thanks for the advice.

The Garmin echo 301dv,echo 551dv,547xs, echoMAP50dv, echoMap70dv, 741xs, 840xs, all have downscan and are in that range.

I like the Garmin 840xs alot but with the sidescan transducer its into 2,000 + . I'm not sure I need the side scan but its a "nice to have". Isn't the Elite 7 a fresh water model? I will be in saltwater most of the time. I have heard a lot bad things about Lowrance customer service. I am still confused about the transducers, some are for sidescan and some are for downscan. Do you need two (2) transducers if you want both capabilities for whatever unit?

The only other problem with the Garmins is the proximity issue to the compass. The only place I can mount this receiver is on top of the console and that is about 12 inches from the compass.; Garmin says 31 inches separation. I suppose I could carry a handheld compass or maybe Garmin figured a way to eliminate lthe magnets in the newer models?

Looking at HB tricks and tips it appears you need two transducers, one for 2D mounted inside the hull and the other for side imaging mounted on the transom. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Thanks for the help.

The HB 999 comes standard with the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T xducer ...which is 83kHz/200kHz 2d and 455kHz/800kHz SideImaging....

The DI feature in the HB SI series units (x99ci HD SI Combo and older)... is a computer generated DI orientation image rendered from the data received by the 2 side pointing SI piezoes...(it is not "true dedicated DI"...there is no "down-pointing" piezo)...

There is no xducer that can be added to the HB SI series units (x99ci HD SI Combo and older)...to get "True Dedicated DI"...(no circuitry to support it...nor programming to render it)...
---------------------------------

The system setup using the stock XHS 9 HDSI 180 T and a "shoot thru hull" XP 9 20 83kHz/200kHz xducer is used by many fiberglass boat types that have trouble getting high speed depth readings from placement of the transom mounted XHS 9 HDSI 180 T....

The HB AS SIDB Y cable is used in the above setup to disconnect the 83kHz/200kHz piezo element from the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T and instead get 2d data from the shoot thru hull mounted XP 9 20 83kHz/200kHz xducer...

Because the AS SIDB Y cable is merely a cable splitter....the SI unit "sees" this dual xducer setup as 1 xducer...

Awesome info.........I will add that the transducer selector switch is another high speed option but when selected to the other ducer there will be no side or down imaging. I like this option better because SI and DI are useless at high speed. When not at speed I thing the elements in the 2d transom mount out performs the in hull 2d elements.

Default Humminbird 999

I looked at the HB999 at BassPro today and like the basic unit but was bothered by the amount of space the Digital number display takes up on the left hand side of the screen.
The sales guy was pretty knowledgeable about the unit but neither of us could find a screen option that would eliminate this display. From my point of view it seems like you effectively lose a significant amount of usable screen area to the point that a Lowrance HDS-7 w/Structure Scan would give you about the same usable screen area for $200 less money.
Is there a way to eliminate this information from the screen?

The Readout boxes can be eliminated in the full screen SI view only...(temp and depth will be overlayed in the bottom left corner of the SI image)...

Thanks for taking the time to respond. A full screen SI picture is what I was hoping to be able to get.
