Default Navionics SonarCharts Problem on Humminbird 1198c SI

I recently purchased the Navionics Platinum+ card, which is supposed to come with SonarCharts. Here's my chip:

Here is me going through the process of updating to the latest chart data:

Now, with that chip in the left slot of my Humminbird 1198c SI, I expect to see contours in the Mobile bay, similar to what is displayed on their SonarCharts WebApp:

Instead, what I see is:

Notice the missing contour lines. Strange thing is, when I pan over to Lake Yazoo, I see the same contour lines on my Humminbird as there are on the WebApp, but that were missing in the Mobile bay:

Any ideas on why I don't get the bottom contours in the Mobile Bay, but I do get them in Mississippi, where I don't really need them?

Jnoel- Navionics here. I am going to offer a few suggestions -
1. Make sure your unit is on Advanced.
2. The most current Software for the Humminbird 1198c SI is 6.600
3. I noticed that you are at .25 NM try zooming in. The Web APP is at 500ft in your screen shot.
I just downloaded the same area and had to zoom into 500ft. for the SonarCharts to show on my screen.

Hope this helps...

Jnoel,

First, thanks for your guidance. I appreciate your efforts to help. I went back out after work tonight, and here's what I found:
1) I was in normal mode, but I changed to Advanced. This had no effect.
2) I should have stated it, but I updated the unit's firmware the same night as the charts were updated. I am currently using 6.640 on my 1198c SI.
3) I verified a lack of contour lines all the way down to 50' in the Mobile Bay area. I also noted the presence of contour lines out to .25SM in the Yazoo Lake area, although at that resolution, they were too small to be of much use.

Also, in playing with the unit some, I found I had contour lines to the West of Mobile Bay (as you noted in the Yazoo Lake area), as well as to the East of Mobile Bay. I saw a very strange thing take place, as these pictures may help illustrate:

Please notice the contour lines in the image above.

Now, notice the distinct LACK of contour lines in this image. You'll notice the ONLY difference between the two is the small difference in latitude. The first is W 087º 36.773' and the second is W 087º 36.777'. I literally panned my way across until the contour lines dropped out. I could repeatably get the lines to reappear and disappear by going back and forth by one "bump" of the panning rocker switch, in either direction. A similar thing occurred on the West side of Mobile bay. Up to a point, contour lines were present. If I panned too far toward Mobile Bay, they'd all disappear again. Upon zooming out, I noticed a box made of dashed lines around the areas that had contours. See here:

If any part of my viewable area was outside the box, all the contour lines went away. When I panned back so my entire viewing area was inside on of those boxes, I had the contour lines. I don't know what that's worth, but is seems significant, since the areas are well defined, and the problem is repeatable precisely at the boundary to those boxes.

Now, don't ask me why the images show up as different sizes here. They are both screen captures from my Humminbird unit, at the same zoom level and the same resolution.

Can I ask you to try one more thing? Try reloading the chart agin with a freshest data program. It may say that there is no new data but you can override this and reload the chart. Who knows it can't hurt. If that doeesn't do it we will get more people involved. I want this to work for you....

I can certainly give that another try. I have nothing to lose. I'm really hoping it works, because I absolutely love the concept. It could really be a headache saver for someone who has a deeper-than-average draft, like I do. Thanks again for your efforts.

Ok, I tried it, and it had no effect. Also, when you are talking about freshest data program, I hope you are talking about the one called ChartInstaller - V1.6.6. If not, I may be using the wrong thing. Despite it not showing contours in my area, I continue to upload sonar recordings. I hope we can get this deal working. I should have a good bit of beautiful data available to me, once that happens!

Thanks again for your help.

I have a similar problem.

As a registered owner/user of the Navionics USA Gold chip, I recently purchased the Navionics + chip to take advantage of the sonar charts features. I have a Humminbird 798ci HD SI that is compatible with this chip according to the Navionics list. I downloaded as directed and after inserting the chip in my unit I see only the Navionics charts, the sonar data does not appear for the east coast areas I selected during the download. I can see that the sonar data is downloading to the card during the fresh data update, however, I see chart data only in all zoom modes. I have changed all defaults settings on my unit and it still does not provide the sonar chart data/view. Is there a particular setting that I must change on the 798 Humminbird unit to access and view the extended sonar features?

Humminbird advised me that Navionics is the correct company to answer this. They did not know the answer.

So strange: Customer service left me a voicemail, suggesting I call back, or view the FAQ on how to configure the Humminbird settings, which should resolve the problem I was having. (Clearly, the person leaving the message was unaware of the details of the problem.) So, I called back, spoke to a guy who admitted to not having any information on my problem. He said he would have my call returned by the lady who had originally tried to contact me. It's been some time now, and I have not heard a peep out of them since.

I'm kinda getting frustrated with the folks at Navionics. They still act like I'm not turning on the Fish&Chips as the chart source. Last time I communicated with them, then seemed surprised that I had documented the problem to this degree. Kinda like starting all over again from scratch. I suspect they're going to wait until my year subscription is up with them, then tell me they can't help me if I don't have a subscription. I'd say don't get this card. Save a couple hundred bucks and some headaches.

Is there any estimate on when that will happen?

Default 632 pplus chart

I too purchased a Navionics platinum plus chart for my Hummingbird 898cHD and was disappointed when I could not view all that cool data I just purchased. I can understand needing to zoom in to view greater detail. But the complexity involved in getting the 898c to display the chart details is ridiculous.

How about this Navionics: program the chip to display the data when inserted into a machine and the proper zoom is selected? I think your customers are expecting to use this stuff in a plug and play mode and not needing to browse internet forums to locate some arcane advice on how to actually view the data.

What I can say about having to zoom in is all the lines become cluttered when zoomed out and you would not be able to differentiate between contour lines.

There are 2 layers SonarCharts and NauticalCharts, SonarCharts does not have the clutter of navigational buoys etc... but has the High Def layer as you zoom in. Nautical Charts is the navigational layer showing borders, channels without the clutter of all the contour lines, and navigational layer. I have used both on the Saint Marys Rivers. All you have to do is enable the Fish n Chips to get SonarCharts one button on off.

Sir I was referring to these instructions for viewing the Navionics data on a Hummingbird unit. I'll try using the "fish n chips" setting to see if this makes a difference.

Much of that conversation was trying to help TipDS troubleshoot an issue. I run Lowrance and was easily able to Navigate the Navionics/Humminbird combo in a friends boat. You have to remember Humminbird controls the precess to getting to the menus.
