From the email with my MMSI number:

WARNING
If you sell or trade this boat and radio with the above number programmed into it, please be sure to cancel this account to make the number available to the new buyer.

Do not use the above number with a new boat & radio as it is still tied to the one you have sold! Instead, you will need to register for a new MMSI number for the new radio.

This is what I just did.

Since the radio cannot easily be reprogrammed, you would be doing the new owner a big favor by leaving the MMSI intact and having the number re-registered in his name. That's what I did when I sold my boat last fall. Pretty simple to do if you have an MMSI that was issued by Boat US or Sea Tow. Not so easy if it is an FCC issued number for a licensed vessel but that is probably not what you have.

Then you just apply for a new number if you get a new radio and program it with that number as registered to you.

The MMSI number now belongs to the new boat owner (it is permanently tied to the boat that you sold, so let the buyer know), so you will have to delete all of your personal info and have the new owner enter his. When you purchase your new boat, assuming it is a brand new boat and does not already have an MMSI number, you will need to get a new number for that boat. This is the way that I understand it, after recently acquiring my own number.

Unless BoatUS has updated thier site, the new owner will need to call to re-register an existing number, even if you've cancelled it. It cannot be done via the web. That's what happened when I sold my last boat and, oddly enough, the same combo of electronics.

They have not, and this is correct.
