Just bought a boat with a Garmin 2010C and want to save waypoints to its data card and transfer them to my PC and vice versa. I just installed a USB Data Card Programmer and it says I can only save maps to the data card. Is there any way to save waypoints, routes, etc. without taking a laptop to the boat and hooking up a serial cable?

Thanks.
1. are you using mapsource on your PC?
2. Have you saved your waypoints and maps to afile that you have named (like "my maps")
3.. If so, there is a button called "send to device"
4. hit the buttone and it will find your data chip and programmer and ask you what you want to save - maps, routes. waypoints, etc
confused? - email me and we'll get on the phone and walk you thru it glen.ersly@bmwmna.com
Glen, I think he's asking about saving waypoints from the 2010c to the card, not vice versa.
To do this go to the main menu in the 2010C and select User Card tab. Then "Manager user card"* You can select which items you want to send to the data card from there.
I don't have my unit in front of me but it works something like this. Should be able to figure it out once you find it in the menus.
Once you get them in the data card it is easy to read and manipulate with Mapsource as Glenn noted.

When I select Save To Device and the USB instead of Serial Port option it says,"Only maps will be saved to the data card. Data cards cannot contain routes, waypoints, or tracks. Use the Serial Port to save these items directly to the GPS."
That blows since I want to transfer my waypoint file to the new boat and don't want to have to mess with a laptop and serial cable etc.
Am I missing something?
Either you're missing something, or I am. Probably me.
Here's my answer to your question. You first have to purchase a blank data card from Garmin - available in several sizes, but the smaller ones are plenty big to hold a couple thousand WP's. Then on your 2010 there is as Mike said a "card" option on the left column menu. You put your blank data card (same size as the Blue Chart cards) in the top map slot and enter "save to card" or something like that. All of your waypoints are then copied/saved onto your blank card. I save WP's this way on a regular basis.
You probably have an older version of software on the 2010. I think it was 5.4 or something that has the ability to save waypoints. It has only been out around a year. You need to find out whihc version of software you have, I think it tells you when it boots up and then go to the Garmin website and download the latest version to your data card. When you put the card in your units #1 slot, it will automatically apply the update. I bet you a beer, that is your problem.
I don't have waypoints on the 2010 yet to save. I do have a bunch of points on my PC from my old GPS that I want to save to my card (16MB) and then transfer to my 2010. When I try to do this it says only maps can be saved to the USB device.
How do I save waypoints onmy PC to my USB device?

are you using the Mapsource program from Garmin on your PC?
Yes, I'm using Mapsource on my PC. I have a bunch of points saved on my PC with it that I want to transfer to my 2010 using the USB device and a data card.
Is there some other software I should use instead?

are you using a recent edition? - like 6.5 or 7? see my post at the beginning of this thread it should work from the "send to device" button if you're looking at your way points and maps on the screen....you should see this:
