Diesel Tachs - The Hull Truth

I have detroit 8.2 TI's, and the tachs run off a signal from the alternator. I just cannot get them to function reliably and accurately.

Is there a better way to do this?

Just curious, what boat are they in. My 1983 29' Phoenix has a pair of them in it. I keep the boat here in Toms River. I don't have any issues with my tachs but I don't think they run off of the alternator??? Very few people seem to have much experience or knowledge of these motors. I would love to swap info???? Mine are the Stewart/Stevenson twin turbo models, apparently pretty rare???? et back to me.....

Mine are in a 32 Blackfin. They were marinized by Johnson and Towers.
