Default Lowrance Elite 7 HDI

I just purchased a 21' Seafox for bumping around the beach. It has a Garmin 740s. I am looking at adding another unit for snapper fishing. I hate the split screen, everything seems to small and cluttered. Will be fishing mostly in 100' of water. Can not decide between another Garmin 740s with B60 or Lowrance Elite 7 HDI. The Garmin is easy to operate and would be nice to have the same units, but I like the idea of the downscan HDI. Opinions?

Don't you already have a transducer connected to the existing 740S? And if so, which one? Odds are it would be re-usable regardless of which unit you added; and there's no point in having two redundant transducers, since you can't use them simultaneously anyway.

Beyond that, the Garmin's sounder is much more powerful, and so might be better suited for deeper waters; but that doesn't seem to apply here. The Elite-7 HDI offers "downscan imaging", if that is of interest to you; but AFAIK has no option for the potentially much more useful side-scanning SONAR, and is is very limited in terms of other functionality.

Bottom Line: If you're happy enough with the 740S to commit to sticking with it indefinitely for chartplotter (and RADAR, if you ever add that) duty, and KNOW you'll never want side-scanning SONAR, go with the Elite-7 HDI. Otherwise, look at the HDS-7 Gen2 Touch or (preferably) HDS-9 Gen2 Touch, either of which can form the basis of a much more capable intgegrated system as time goes on.

I will never add radar or side scan to this boat. The Garmin has TM P66 now. I have had better luck with the B60 over TM in the past. Seems to give better pic and holds bottom better while running. I know that are the same power, but thru hull seems to have better water?? The only reason I am considering Elite is due to downscan images, but not sure it will do anything that the Garmin will not do. If it will show individual fish instead of a mass, I might give it a chance. I did notice that it was only rated for 250watts.

With the 250watts (HDS, standard 50/200kHz), witch you dislike, I reach bottom as deep as 667 FATHOMS and there was no deeper waters to find out how deep I could go.

OK, then that much is a wash.

Exactly.

You just said it: It does downscan imaging; the Garmin does not.

Those who have used DSI report that it does not show individual fish, or even smallish schools of baitfish, at least not particularly well. What it does show is the bottom structure which might conceivably attract those baitfish; but it does so only more-or-less directly under the boat, not up to ~300 feet either side of the boat, like StructureScan does..

Don't read too much into that. Navico's sounders are said to have somewhat more sensitive receivers than most; so the overall difference (if any) is presumably smaller than the raw numbers would imply. But since no one (AFAIK, anyway) actually tests receiver sensitivity in sounders, this is all just guesswork.

Can anyone see the two fish hugging the bottom in this DOWNSCAN image?

Itteldo is right.....give it a chance.

It's from the DownScan part of StructureScan. DownScan on a HDS corresponds to DSI on Elite-7 nDSI.

+The MFD was actually a Gen2 HDS with StructureScan, from the Dr. Sonar gallery.
