Default fixed mount or handheld vhf

I just bought a new 18 ft.CC and need a radio. Since I've never owned a boat with a radio I need help.
I do all of my fishing inshore in the bay and there is a coast guard station within 5 or 6 miles from where I fish. Is a hand held good enough or should I get a fixed mount, and if I do go with fixed mount what size antennae is recomended

If you can afford both, get a fixed mount and a pocket size handheld. Otherwise I'd suggest the fixed mount first. It will have the power you might need if you ever go further away than you think.

Good luck!

I'll second Kamper's comments. Plus you can't forget your fixed mount at home!

As for your antenna you'd be fine with a good quality 4'. Won't get in the way on your console. If you have a T-top you'd want to consider going with an 8'.

I'd vote for fixed mount first as well. Don't have to worry about constantly keeping the hand-held charged. I also like the 8' antenna rec if you have t-top.

I have both and ditto what they said. The fixed mount has much more range. Then get the remote.

There will come a time when you wish you had the range of a fixed mount Vs a handheld; basically 25 Watts Vs 5 Watts or so. The same reasoning applies to a 4' Vs a 8' antenna.
