Wow, so far we all seem to run multiple radios in case of failure and between the comments here...we have had ICOM, Standard Hor. and Garmin all fail. Doesn't seem to be one clear winner in this thread. At least the Garmin is N2K, which offers some nice features.

Years ago VHF radios were more dependable. Made in China explains it all!!! Icom claims to be made in japan but probably full of China made parts.

It's now distributed by Si-Tex so most US dealers should be able to get you one.
I don't even know what Class D means to be honest. For $500+ dollars, no thanks. Never heard of it, who knows what the warranty is and it is very expensive.

ICOM offered to fix my radio if I paid for it. Pretty stupid program in my mind, $150 radio, they charge you $42 just to give an estimate and then it is $84 an hour. So, I send it in, they tell me it is 2 hours labor, $168 to fix a $150 radio that barely made it out of warranty and if I don't do that, they charge me $42 plus my shipping there and back. Ridiculous.

An excellent concise explanation can be found at:

We put my VHF on 2 other boats and it has the same issue, put a VHF on my boat and no problem. It is the radio. I have only had 2 ICOM radios and both crapped in a few short years. As a boat owner for 27 years, these are the first and only VHF radios I have ever had go bad. So, ICOM is out of the question.

Standard Horizon, which I used for years without issue, seems to be one of the 2 most expensive(ICOM is the other). Is there a reason not to get a Garmin or some other brand of VHF?
Jagsare......You may have seen this, but here's a link to an earlier thread in which I describe my experience with Garmin radios. The partial DSC capability is a big issue for me as I use a radio. My Garmin#3 is still working, but if/when it fails I will probably replace with an Icom 412, unless something better shows up in the meantime.......

I had the same problem with my Icom 504. Can't receive unless squelch is at minimum and faded at best. This was my second 504 that went bad in 8 yrs. Only reason I bought the second 504 was due to not wanting to deal with the dash cutout. Now that second one went bad, I will deal with the cutout and install a Standard Horizon Matrix AIS in its place. Icom lost my confidence due to reliability issues.

I don't think enough has been said about aftermarket support. SH stands up for their products, and every other manufacturer fails in comparison. I won't have another radio if I can avoid it. That's because I believe that product support is at least as important as the hardware.

Hopefully my new SH will be back in stock next week and I will install in a day or so.

I'm in business. New SH GX1200. FYI, there is a rebate for most SH products, $20 in this case.
