Default Garmin 740s locking up

Purchased new Garmin 740s touchscreen. While touching the screen trying to pan, it shows a yellow x and the unit locks up and will not work. I have to cut it off and turn it back on to work again. I called Garmin they gave me an update for it but has not cured the problem. Anyone else experience this problem?

My guess is that you're just being a little too "gingerly" with it. That yellow "X" (in a circle, IIRC; but I've not been on my boat for a couple of months now) is the map cursor, and indicates that the plotter thinks you're trying to mark a spot on the chart (such as to enter a waypoint or similar). It comes up when you touch the screen WITHOUT dragging it anywhere. Odds are, you've got a bit of "finger bounce" going on. Just make a point of FIRMLY pressing on the screen then dragging it in whatever direction WITHOUT lifting your finger.

I had the same problem with mine. My 740S would only start working again if I shut off all power via the Perko switch. That fix was only temporary. When I contacted a Garmin tech, I was emailed a link and instructions to download the latest software. I had purchased my unit at a bricks and mortar West Marine and found my particular software was two or three upgrades old. After the downloan, I still had problems. It was under warranty (only a couple of months old) and they sent me a new "refurbished" unit which "looked" brand new. So far no problems but I have not used the boat much.

I bought mine from Overton's in Greenville, and I also had to cut the power to it just like you described. Garmin gave me the same update, I applied it and it still did not work. The boat has been sitting for 3 months. I tried it yesterday after Itt. response and now it works. Hope it keeps working. I knew I could not be the only one having this problem.

I would be careful and not let the warranty run out. Mine was sporadic also. Garmin was good to deal with but the wanted a copy of the receipt very soon in the process. I have googled this problem and I was able to find others with the same issue.
