Can only assume you are not joking. If the salesman told you that, he was not telling the truth - as they are two seperate companies like Ford and Chevrolet. FYI some of the McMurdo units failed the Coast Guards tests for reliability while the ACR unites all passed.
there was an issue with some of the early units but that has since been rectified. i recently purchases a mcmurdo at a local show after doing reasearch on it and i am confident in my decision...
i don't think that the authorities would approve a life safety device that was questionable in the first place.
I had an ACR brochure in my hand, I stoped to ask him about a data cable for my Ray 435. He pointed at my ACR brochure and said "we sell the comerical version of that, not the boaters world version, McMurdo is the parent company of ACR is McMurdo, they market under ACR for retail purchases and McMurdo for commerical sales"
I used to live in Jacksonville, im guessing you went to the boatshow up there? You know, contrary to popular belief, McMurdo/Revere rafts/epirbs are *NOT* bad. Infact, they are of very good quality, just do not have USGC approval. They are based out of Jacksonville, you might want to see if you can check out their showroom.

You may want to read this BEFORE you think of buying McMurdo. I do not like people that risk my life. They failed almost every test. Surely they tested it before they sold it to people as a life saving device. I will not be giving them the chance to use me as a test.
You might have a long time in the water if you have a purchase an ACR.
"The ACR failed to acquire a GPS fix within 45 minutes. During the same retest, under the same conditions, the McMurdo Fastfind Plus acquired a GPS fix in 1 minute, 15 seconds."
